Just seeing if anyone knew of any good accounting jobs in the BR area. I have about 5 years experience doing pretty much everything in accounting except Audit.

hahah "everything except audit"
You do realize that like 70 percent of the jobs are in audit right? Have you just been doing tax or advisory or what?

I have been doing and working in the private sector. I definitely wouldn't say that 70% of accounting jobs are in audit.

You probably would have had better luck during tax season. My friend works for a CPA firm that hired several people earlier this year. My company is looking for an Internal Auditor at the moment but requires audit experience. Good luck

I'm referring to jobs at accounting firms; industry accounting is worthless (especially if you're under 30)

You have been doing accounting work, but are you a CPA? If so, have you beeinvolved in any business valuation projects? What has been and what will continue to be a very hot speciality in accounting is forensic accounting, which includes business valuation and many other disciplines. Most of the larger local/regional accounting firms have increased the size of their dispute resolution practices so think about it. I am a Big 4 audit manager and know about the industry.

I wouldn't say it's worthless but public experience is more marketable.

Well I went private b/c I was able to make 10k more than any public job that I was offered at the time. Also, I have a family so I'm not looking to travel much which, if you are in audit, you are normally traveling a good bit.

FWIW the majority of my recently graduated friends that are auditors in either Houston, the ATL, BTR or NOLa, and I don't think any of them has had to be gone for longer than a day. OTOH, one friend works for PWC in Charlotte doing IA, and she might as well not have an apartment.

Or you could go for government auditing, move to DC, and hardly ever travel. Working on client site just means taking Metro to a different location.

Big Four travel can range from zero to 50% (I have seen some folks have 30+ weeks in a year (rare)). However there tends to be some flexability (if you are adament you do not want to travel, then that is considered by the Firms). Not always, but sometimes.
Also there has been a move lately to use other offices more. In the late 90's in Houston, we always travelled to the cities in which subs were located, regardless of whether we had an office there... that is softening.

I'm a senior accounting major right now hoping to get a Big 4 internship for the Spring of 2010. So would you suggest one get involved in Forensic Accounting? It is still considered "audit", correct?

I do auditing for a small firm with zero travel, but that's pretty rare.

My advice would be to do the internship and do plain old auditing until you are a senior. At that juncture explore any opportunity within your Firm in fields such as forensics etc... they want and you will want the seasoning in audit.
Option 2 is stay in audit to manager and then any firm (not just yours) would be your option into a specialized field.
Just my two cents

One of my friends in H-town was telling me horror stories about how he got stuck on a team with a bunch of anti-social types and they got terrible reviews. Felt bad for him.

Yikes... most of us develop the war stories as time passes in this wonderful world of public accountancy. The experience is invaluable, but the shite/antics that sometimes transpire (I mean seriously, some engagements are 365 days a year with 10 other accountants... nothing good can come from that!)

I've been in a public tax practice for 25 years. The pay is good, the work schedule is flexible outside of tax season, no hassles from coworkers, very little travel, high degree of job security.
I think it is a good job for an accountant and I would recommend it to new graduates.
