I am self employed and have a company 401k for myself and my wife. Over the last 3-4 years I have piled in about $135,000 into it total between the two of us, but never really looked at the fund choices and the money has been in a target fund. I just turned 40 and am looking at doing some future planning. It looks like we actually have some decent choices in here, and I am looking for the board's advice on potential allocation (I know it's a message board but you guys have taught me a lot on here).I am 40 and my wife is 37. I know the vanguard indexes are popular here. Going to pile in the max for my wife and I for the foreseeable future.

Fund choices other than target funds:

Fidelity Mid Cap Index
FSMDX

Fidelity Small Cap Index
FSSNX

Ishares Msci Eafe International Index K
BTMKX

Nuveen Equity Index R6
TIEIX

Vanguard Balanced Index Adml
VBIAX

Vanguard Growth Index Adml
VIGAX

Vanguard Small Cap Growth Index Adml
VSGAX

Vanguard Small Cap Index Adml
VSMAX

Vanguard Small Cap Value Index Admiral
VSIAX

Vanguard Value Index Adml
VVIAX

Thanks in advance.

VIGAX looks like a great fund that is aligned to the S&P. I would probably allocate 60% to that one

And then pick one of the small caps that closely tracks the Russell 2k and dump the other 40% into that one

You can basically create an S&P500 proxy by going 60% VIGAX and 40% VVIAX for your large cap allocation. it's a very low combined expense ratio too compared to a lot of all in one funds.

No, please don't do this. That's way too much small cap exposure.

Vanguard’s total stock market index is a winner, if that is an option.

Complexity does not yield results.

Go simpler.

See Vanguard 3 fund strategy and don’t look back.

33% VIGAX
33% TIEIX
12% FSMDX
4% VSGAX
4% VSMAX
4% VSIAX (or you can just pick one small cap at 12%)
10% BTMKX

I’m up about 15% off of y’all’s recommendations 11 months ago. Got out of about 10 to 12 different funds and went down to 3 funds plus my company stock.

I don’t have any small cap funds or international funds. Got the heck out of bonds because I’m only 43 and my EJ guy has me in some bonds.

9% DFA Large Cap .32% fee
25% Vanguard 1000 Growth VRGWX .16% fee
28% Fidelity 500 Index .115% fee
38% Company Stock .10% fee pays quarterly dividend at .39 a share. It’s about $1,600 a year which isn’t a ton but gets reinvested.

But why? If you want the S&P, then buy VOO/VFIAX.
