276 lost jobs today in the Baton Rouge area
Heard that 226 people are being let go by Louisiana Technical College systems this week and that 50 people in management were let go by the Belle of Baton Rouge today.
You do realize the LTC is statewide and not just in LA? How many of those 226 jobs are in the BR area?

If the math was done, these folks have been part of the drop program, which they have guaranteed income of the average of their 3 highest years of salary
You have gotten incorrect information about the way the state retirement system works. retirement pensions are, in fact, defined benefit plans in state government. However, the payout is based on the number of years worked. In order for someone to receive 100% of their salary as a retirement benefit, they would generally have had to work 40 years. There are a few exceptions for a small number of job classifications. And retirement benefits are not paid out of the state general fund. DHH or Education, or whatever department doesn't budget each year for retiree pensions. This argument doesn't make sense.

Not only does the state have to pay these people their well earned retirement when they could be able bodied working citizens justly earning wages near their retirement package, there is the unemployment factor.
If someone is in fact making near their salary in retirement benefits, why is unemployment an issue? This makes no sense. Unemployment is an issue only when someone doesn't have the income or financial resources to continue to live their lives.

I also have a problem with hiring outsiders to run our govt agencies. There should be some point system or requirements of Lousiana residency to have a state job.
This is pure, unadulterated BS. you hire the best person for the job. If they are from LA, then wonderful. If not, then you don't let that stop you from hiring them. Hiring someone to run a department or state agency is not a feel-good proposition designed to employ a citizen of Louisiana. It is an endeavor to hire the person who will most efficiently and effectively run the department.

Baton Rouge was one of only two Louisiana SMSA's which had job growth year over year as of June.
Don't worry, she'll ignore this fact.

"She"? I was assuming from the hysterical tone of the posts that Queen = .....oh, never mind....

You know, I wonder how much that stuff the media puts out is true. Seems there is another post engaging in discussion about the number of unexpected unemployment claims going up this month which was released by the govt this past week.
I don't believe half of what the media says. They say what they want to and can completely ignore things that they like. I work in real estate and deal with people in numerous professions. I cannot even begin to tell you how many people I have talked to that have had to move because of job loss. You don't hear about it on tv or in The Advocate. You don't hear that a company let go of 50 people or that hours are being cut back. All of that starts adding up.
I think those who have been out there painting this great picture that Baton Rouge is doing fine just don't want to see the whole truth. If I remember correctly, even the BR Biz Report printed a cover on this.

Mandatory now all LSU folks take 52 hours off this year.
This isn't true anymore. I got a notice saying they aren't forcing furloughs anymore.

I know 2 folks for sure who lost their jobs in Dec 2008 and are still unemployed. They are no longer in the statistics. I actually called Jindal's office to see what kind of programs could help the first one, as he was a contractor that didn't qualify for unemployment. Contract labor with a cutback. He has been living off credit card advances and may lose his home this month. Guess what! Jindal's office said there were no programs for folks like him. How nice is that???
If you own 3 businesses with 100 employees then I would assume you would be paying unemployment insurance on them. Therefore you know that if your employer doesn't pay into the system you can't collect.

When did it become the government's job to support EVERYONE. If you own 3 businesses then you are probably doing well for yourself. Why can't you help your friend out. People like you are all for charity as long as it is someone else's money. You are probably living the posh life and driving around in a Hummer or something.
Charity begins at home my friend.

You take a look back & see how many jobs Huey Long brought into the economy.
I know this thread is a bit old but I wanted to give an example of the effect of Huey Long type corruption. Back in the 70's a large chemical plant was built in Pollock. Bids were put out for paving the parking lot. A guy in the construction business calls and asks to bid. Sure, that is fine. The guy says actually, Governor Edwards' office told me about this job and they really would like it if I win the job. Well, good luck. He was high bidder and the job went to the low bid. This guy was furious. "I thought I told you the Governor wanted me to win that bid!". They were naive mid-westerners and just shrugged it off. After that the plant got every bureaucratic hassle possible from the state government. It made their lives miserable but they did finish the plant and operated for 30 years.
The company then decided they needed more plants employing several hundred people each. Where were they built? Kansas, Oklahoma, and Iowa. Without the corruption more would have been built in Louisiana but the company was just fed up.
Populism and corruption have been a terrible legacy for the economy of the state of Louisiana. I love the state but people who defend the corruption really piss me off.
