I can't listen to Hawthorne. Just gave up. Had to come on here to find out the score. Unhappy with the loss, but happy I didn't listen to Hawthorne.

While I could go on talking about your likes and dislikes for eternity (realy, I could) I would rather discuss why I like Hawthorne - since you asked.

Hawthorne can get negative a lot of the time when we are getting curb stomped. One time in particular that sticks out in my head is the Miss St basketball game. We were down and would scratch our way back only to commit a stupid turnover/penalty/shot. When we finally broke free in the third OT he was ecstatic! He was saying what I felt. It wasn't that "we threw the ball away" it was that we "threw the ball away carelessly". Some people can't take color in their cometary. Most of them start a thread on the rant after every LSU sporting event saying "Hawthorn is too negative" There's never any mention of him being excited when we do win.

I personally like the fact that our announcers are fans of LSU. When something good happens, he yells with joy. If they miss a shot or the other team makes a shot, he is pissed. If the refs suck, he says it.

And when times are bad he says "I hate when the refs call this crap" famous quote live on the radio from the Vanderbilt vs. LSU game: 3/4/09

If only these other fools would do the same thing. Then we wouldn't have to have a stupid Hawthorne bashing thread every game.

Jim's call in Chick-fil-a bowl.
First Ga Tech play on offense.

"The receiver is open AGAIN!!".

He is too much of a fan. He cannot comment when LSU is not doing well.

"Ogilvie under the basket...Count it, LSU simply has no answer for that...they can do that all night if they want to."

and my favorite...

"LSU just simply has to score"

So the best defense anyone can muster for Hawthorne is that "he's a fan"? Can anyone seriously argue that he is competent when it comes to describing the action? That he regularly gives time/score updates? That he can discern a Texas leaguer from a towering home run? That he doesn't whine incessantly when LSU is down?

No.

FWIW, Jim Henderson is a huge Saints fan, and his calls are among the most exiting in the country, IMO. But he's also a consummate play-by-play commentator. He doesn't whine, he calls it like he sees it, and he almost always gets it right.

See, you can have it all. You just have to ask for it.

I like Jim in general, my problem with him is he tends to get caught up in the action and leaves out the details of what's going on. A good announcer paints a picture to the listener, Jim calls it like a fan.
