If you have a job to do. Sometimes after a while you get a little dormant, stale, or com-placid maybe. I think Jim was good early in his LSU broadcast career, but now find him a little annoying. Sure it's a hard job to please this fan base, but maybe a tune-up is necessary. But really it's not only him. I think the whole crew is marginal at best. Some changes need to be made. Jim's a good guy though, as I'm sure the whole crew is.

One of the things about human beings is that we're all the same yet we're all different.
I listened to the same broadcast of the same game yet I don't feel as if JH was negative at all in his attitude.
He said, "The ball just won't go in the hole." "LSU can't buy a basket." Was that not the truth, especially in the first half?
He said, "CJ is not big enough to guard Ogilvy."
"The Tigers just have no answer for Ogilvy."
Since the guy scored a career high and nobody on LSU's team had any real succcess stopping him, that sounds pretty much like truthful statements to me.
Personally, I heard more frustration that the Tigers just couldn't get over the hump than negativity. Many times I heard he and Ford talk about how hard the Tigers were playing yet giving Vandy credit for coming out and playing hard and taking advantage of an LSU glaring weakness.
Much of how we perceive what we see and hear is colored by our own attitudes. I suggest that all those finding "negativity" in JH and KF's broadcast(s) first take a long look in their mirror for the source. Just like the originator of this thread said, "I'm a negative person by nature."

LSU cannot buy a basket.

And Vandy is just having its way inside the paint."
And don't forget: "They just simply cannot stop Olgivy". "My oh my." It's true that he gets more emotional and more demonstrative when things are going poorlyl. He does drive me crazy. It's impossible to listen to. The Vandy play by play was a breath of fresh air.

It's well documented here that it's not necessarily what he says (although that is a problem sometimes) but more how he says it. That whine in his voice. He just sounds like a negative Rantard fan calling the games sometimes and when they do pull out the win, he's rather subdued sometimes.

The best play-by-play guy over there is Patrick Wright(sp?). The only thing keeping him from being great is his voice. It could be a little bit better.

Also, Hawthorne is in charge of the announcers for the LSU sports dept. He tell Charles and Patrick what games they are doing and when.

Why do you think he lets these guys do their games? It's because those two are no serious threat to his job.

He shouldn't do all three sports but bc he's a control freak he does.

Uh yes there is: I don't need Jim Hawthorne sounding like the world is coming to an end when I'm already p.o'd at the goings on.

Jim's getting a bit long in the tooth and each year he seems to grow more and more negative. However, in SEC country the long-time broadcasters are rarely put out to pasture regardless of their public acceptance. So just bear with him cause he ain't going anywhere seems to be the pulse of the LSU athletic community. Kevin Ford actually seems to goad Jim into his pessimistic rants at times. I refer to them as Granny and her Momma. The good news is that most of the time the Tigers prevail in spite of the negative ranting.

Mike, first of all I do like Jim, have met him and he's a very personable fellow. However, I think some of the feelings about Jims perceived negativity stems from the long duration of his career. Those who have listened to him from day one of his LSU experience and even before when he called Centenary's games, have taken notice that he's become more inclined to give negative vibes over the air as the years have progressed. In other words, he's only human and does weave in the road from time to time. Jim was the ulimate professional when he began his LSU career, rarely displaying the kind of emotion you commonly here now. But we're all inclined to wear our emotions on our sleeves as we get older IMPO. As you said we're all the same yet all different. My Dad always said, " Remember you are unique, just like everybody else."

FWIW, Jim Henderson is a huge Saints fan, and his calls are among the most exiting in the country, IMO. But he's also a consummate play-by-play commentator. He doesn't whine, he calls it like he sees it, and he almost always gets it right.

See, you can have it all. You just have to ask for it.

One other thing to point out, for all the people who say we have to get a local guy whenever Hawthorne finally retires - Henderson is from up north. Then again, they probably wanted Moreau for AD.
