and would be physically outmatched by the more modern guys.

Love the thread but gotta disagree my good sir, in any age and in any time Pete would be able to matchup physically pre-injury with anybody. His body-control alone on offense and his ability to "read" offenses and understand what offensive players were trying to do better than even they knew about themselves was crazy. At his best he was a 6 rebound 2 steal a game defensive player with a PER of like 25 which is insane.

Waters - 1
Maravich - 5
Dupree - 1
Davis - 3
Shaq - 5

Any team with Maravich and Shaq is going to be really difficult to beat.

Yet LSU never did much as a team with either of them

Shaq at LSU was awesome but not the Diesel he was in the NBA

Love Pete but he dominated the ball to such an extent I think it hurt his teams at times. Never won anything in college or the Pros.

I wouldn't question his offensive talent, even today. In fact, I think a more wide open game and the three point line probably play into his strengths. But compared to someone like Ben Simmons it would be hard for Pistol Pete to compete on a purely size/athleticism level. You could argue that the added flexibility of leaving Pete off the team would be a positive because both Pete and Shaq need the ball.

Personally, I'll take the offense having both of those on the team provides and figure it out on the other end. But there's an argument to be made.

Waters - Maravich - Carter - Bass - O'Neal

Also, how is Bright 3$, I am not sure he would have made the nickel list.

There's alot of nickel-list point guards in LSU basketball history.

I love shaq, but if you want to build that team for a championship, you have to leave off Shaq, probably Pete also.

Should also add a column for the coach and make it $18 to spend. Or add a coach and 6th man slot. I could see taking Shaq or Pete if your coach is Will Wade.

Here's another one with a different dynamic:

PG-Waters
G-Jackson
G-Maravich
PF-Bass
C-Smith

You have three parimeter players who, when they have the ball in their hands, could either penetrate, score from the outside, or break your neck with a crazy pass/assist. Then you have two very solid inside bodies who can play D and score in the paint.

While he may not be a $3 atleast worth of discussion to me a $2. Most starts in LSU basketball history, member of two different All-SEC teams granted neither were first team. Great defender, and averaged double figures in points in all 4 years in a very competitive SEC and doing so on teams that had NBA talent and pure scorers. As a ball handler finished with more assists than turnovers for three straight years and was in the Top in steals and assists in the SEC for 3 years. Solid player I know you are not saying he is not a solid player but have some of the greatest basketball players ever its hard to compare any of our players to our greatest ones.

Pistol Pete is point guard. Shaq is center. No-brainers. At power forward, I would take John Williams over Rudy Macklin, but this is close. Small forward -- Ronnie Henderson. Dude could absolutely scorch the nets from 3 pt land. Shooting guard -- I'm looking for a big defender. One is not readily coming to mind.

Honorable mention: Bob Pettit; Kenny Higgs; Hi-C; Ethan Martin; Leonard Mitchell; Nikita Wilson; Chris Jackson (duh); Glen Davis; D Mitch; Dwayne Scales, others I'm sure.

In the pros, they just could not double and triple team him.
Also, he had a lot of fouls called on him as refs could not grasp his strength and size.
