A quick internet search says his net worth is 4 million and he’s coaching football.
Hope he manages it well. Did he play long enough to bet an NFL pension? That would certainly help him in the long run.
Good luck going forward to Jamarcus Russell!

if he goes through the remainder of what's left there's no helping him

I used to live in Mobile and know a family member of his. He blew every dime he had. This was several years ago so he may have sold some real estate and made some money back, but he’s definitely not worth 4mil currently.
That said, I believe he is coaching at Williamson and has really turned things around and made a nice life for himself.

he was amazing in the latter half of the 2006 season. The best I have seen at LSU up until Burrow in '19.

that's the irony of (part) of his story, he wants to portray himself as a poor ghetto kid whose entire family's future depends on him getting to "the league" so he can make that "paper," what does he, or any of his family have to show for it now? not shitting on him but that is a mindset that has stymied black kids for generations

I remember watching him when I was in high school .
He played us in a scrimmage before the season started.
It was crazy watching him just run over people being as skinny as he was. Picked us apart through the air as well.
Definitely the mvp that day.
I knew he was going to the league after watching that.

One of my favorite games of all-time. Jemarcus was outstanding, but that last TD drive in the fourth quarter was all run. My wife could not understand why I was screaming BRIAN MOTHER frickING JOHNSON for six straight plays. Hell, I was a half dozen cocktails in, so I don't think she understood WHAT I was saying, much less who I was referring to. Six straight runs by Keiland Williams right behind Johnson who was road grading the entire right side of the Irish defense to ice the game.

Beautiful article. Thanks for posting. Don't think you can fake the love he has and has had for his family. Fantastic.

Didn’t he employ a jeweler to travel with him?

Drive 20miles west of Jamarcus’ neighborhood to Theodore or Irvington AL. Go to a trailer park. It’s the exact same issue with poverty in white communities. Has nothing to do with “black kids for generations”. It’s an issue of anyone growing up in poverty.

enjoyed the read OP! Him talking about beating ND in the Sugar Bowl....that team at that time should have won it all.

I am glad I took time to read it. People make these kids feel important. I read all the time how a kid calls a meeting to make an announcement. Everyone gets excited, is he picking us? Only to find out that he is naming his top 8.There heads get so big they can't put their helmet's on. Now they are being offered cash up front, out in the open. Kids that never had anything are suddenly going to have a lot of cash and what is this going to do? I can feel Jamarcus as a person. But that is the price for celebrity. I am happy that he is able to continue life with a good attitude.

Cool article, it started awful then it turned great. Definitely filled in some whole people had been wondering about.
JaMarcus has a soulfulness I never realized about him. On camera he never said anything nearly as informative as this article. He could have prevented a lot of his misfortune by just communicating more.

Yep, he was always just a N****** to them. No, bro, they were paying you to be their franchise player and you effed it up. Same as Ryan Leaf, who nobody has ever called a N****. Of course, nobody has called you that either but it’s red meat.

Yep, can’t think of any examples of him being targeted for racism, but that’s the in thing for blacks to claim, he had the world by the arse and pissed it away, a very self serving story, imo

quote:I put Russell below Flynn and Mett as well. Based on how he did when he played here. Obviously he was talented.
I think he’s definitely Top 5. He’s in the top 3 that I’ve seen play at LSU. I didn’t see Bert Jones or YA Tittle play, but I would think most people would have Burrow, Hodson, Russell, Jones and Tittle in their top 5.
