Xavier too much for LSU, leave BR with 80-70 victory

I thought LSU would be able to pull this one out at home, but unfortunately I was wrong. It wasn't hard to tell that Xavier was the more battle tested team, and that they had more talent 1-9. Despite going approximately nine minutes without scoring, it was nice to see LSU battle back within 5 points in the last couple of minutes. During the second half, LSU had 5-6 shots that rimmed out. After the last one, me and a former LSU player looked at each other and just kind of chuckled. It was just one of those nights, and those types of shots have been falling over the past three games. As far as the officiating is concerned, they let a lot of contact go around the basket. I felt that LSU was trying too hard to draw the foul at times and that this hurt them last night. Xavier is a very physical team, and this style of officiating was to their benefit. Having said that, Xavier earned this victory, and the refs aren't to blame.
Here are a few random thoughts from the game:
-Xavier wasn't a great free throw shooting team entering last night (right around 68%)but they shot lights out from the line going 20-24. On the other hand, LSU shot below their season average as they went 12-19 from the stripe. Down the stretch, Xavier made their free throws and this played a large role in determining the outcome.
-For the first time since Utah, LSU got outrebounded (40-27). Raymond was a very big guard, and he had his way on the boards pulling down 9 rebounds.
-Temple and Johnson combined for 10 points, and that simply isn't enough production between the two. In order for LSU to be successful, they really need for these two guys to combine for 18-20 points.
-Despite the loss, it was nice to see LSU take care of the ball. LSU only turned the ball over 11 times against a good defensive team, and Xavier turned it over 17 times. However, this doesn't really matter when you go 9 minutes without putting the ball in the hole.
-LSU is basically going 7 deep with only Q. Thornton and Martin logging any serious minutes off the bench. I know that Storm's back has been an issue, so I'm not sure if that is keeping him off the court. However, I wish they could get a few more productive minutes out of guys like Graham, Bass, and possibly Farrer.
At the end of the night, this game really didn't change my opinion of LSU's team. The Tigers play hard, and they should be a good team within the SEC. Unfortunately, things don't get much easier as they must travel to Knoxville on Wednesday night. As of now, I think LSU has a great shot at winning the SEC West and going something like 22-9, 10-6 or possibly 23-8, 11-5 due to the SEC being down.

That second half scoring drought, between the 10-15 minute mark really killed us. IMO Xavier is an elite team and will go far into the NCAA tourney.

Looked to me in the second half they were forcing shots as well. Some of those shots Thorton took were ridiculous. I know he's the best player out there, but damn.

I'll say one of the big points of the game was I believe at roughly the 1:40 mark we were down by 5 I believe and had just made two straight shots. Then coming down court holloway walked so blatantly everyone in the arena knew it, but the ref standing 6 feet away. They then burned off about 15-20 more seconds and scored. I really knew it was over right there.
I was proud of the guys though. Tasmin had a terrible night and a lot of those shots usually fall. And many shots like you said rimmed in and out. This will be a very beneficial game for us the more we play into the year.

and xavier was able to sub 3-4 guys in at a time

I can't disagree with anything you said. I still think if it wasn't for that drought LSU would have found a way to win. It wasn't for lack of effort or anything. unfortunately the basket just had a lid on it for about 10 minutes.

I have to say even though we lost I was impressed with our team. It's a far cry from Brady's teams loosing huge leads b/c of turnovers etc

Stro was on point above. We play sound half court defense when we are focused, but I think we need to mix in a few double teams in the post. I know it becomes a philosophy thing with coaches, but I think we need to do something to keep big posts from getting into a groove early in games. I think if we set the tone early with an occasional low post double, we may cause some hesitation or maybe a mistake or two, especially with a freshman post like last night.
Not every team we face have effective big men, with the exception of Bama, the teams we lost to did.

This team should be able to build off of this and build some momentum for the rest of the season because there were alot of positives.

Also, it seems that Xavier just always had an answer. LSU would tie the game up, and Xavier would come back with a basket. LSU was never able to extend any type of lead due to this. I just remember hoping for a stop, and Xavier would put it in the basket.

Xavier has played in some big games this year and won some big games. LSU has not been able to win the marquee OOC games. That Wash State win is looking ok right now but their RPI is in the 100's. LSU is a good SEC team. That makes them average in anyother league. Fortunately the SEC may be the worst BCS bball league this year.

Thought big white guy killed us..... and he was getting away with alot of pushing, and he recieved ball 1 foot in lane 1 foot out, dribbles slowly to middle makes fake one way slow turns other, lowers shoulder(foul) and then sinks shot(nice touch) and all of this happens in less then 3 secs?? no f'n way!
Brown killed us too, thought we shoulda put temple on him.
but in the end, missed free throws did us in, some shady refereeing hurt, but missed ft's and the drought did us in.....

Their resume is pretty impressive, and last night certainly didn't hurt.

Damn, and they just recently came up short one point against UCLA and I believe two points against USC.

agreed

LSU played well. but let's face it. If Xavier would have kept feeding it to their big men down low all game, it wouldn't have been that close. We had no answer for that. No interior defense has and will kill this team.

There was about a 10 minute stretch in the 2nd half where Tasmin locked him down. I think Brown would have been a little much for Temple down low.

In the eyes of the committee that win over Washington State isn't that impressive. They are an ok team. The 30 point loss at Utah is really ugly.
Here is the remaining schedule
Wed. Jan. 28 at Tennessee
Sat. Jan. 31 Arkansas
Wed. Feb. 04 at Georgia
Sun. Feb. 08 Alabama
Wed. Feb. 11 at Mississippi State
Sat. Feb. 14 Mississippi
Wed. Feb. 18 at Arkansas
Sat. Feb. 21 Auburn
Tue. Feb. 24 Florida
Sat. Feb. 28 at Kentucky
Wed. Mar. 04 Vanderbilt
Sat. Mar. 07 at Auburn
Wins: vs. Arkansas, at UGA, vs. Alabama, vs. Ole Miss, vs. Auburn and vs. Florida
Losses: at Tennessee, at Miss State, at Arkansas, at UK, at Auburn
Torn: vs. Vandy...( I like AJ Ogilvy)
I think Auburn and Arkansas could be flip flopped. I just see LSU splitting with those two teams

Agreed with losses at Tenn, UK, and State. However, Arkansas has been blown out at home a couple of times in SEC play, so it's definitely a winnable game. Auburn is scary, but another winnable game on the road. Like you stated, I could definitely see LSU stealing one of these on road.

Very winnable game at home, they looked like crap at home today.

I think Arkansas is a lot better than they have played the last two weeks. They have still beaten two very good top 10 Big 12 schools which is more than LSU has done. Just like LSU has been hot the last two weeks this is still a team that lost to Alabama. I think lsu splits with Arkansas and Auburn. Auburn is another team that is really good when they are shooting the 3 well
