Why punt? What are your odds at getting a turnover against a team that's going to run 3 straight times? How often in the past 3-5 years have our running backs fumbled the ball?

LSU fumbled the ball and turned it over trying to run the clock out against North Carolina.

Going for it makes a lot of sense. Lots of chance for a PI penalty or a late hit especially with a running QB.

If you don't get it, you can still stop the run until LSU kicks the FG.. and it is missed/blocked/good.. either way your situation has improved compared to punting it.

This is a refreshing topic.. wish I would have seen it earlier so that I could keep up with the thread. I think it makes for great debate and obviously with 8+ pages it must have.

I actually had a long post typed out agreeing with you, then I deleted it all before posting and thought about it more. I think punting is the right call here.

I understand your argument.. but if you were to go for it and not get it (or kneel).. then LSU is on the 8 yard line. I think forcing a quick 3 downs and field goal would give have given Wisconsin a better chance to win than punting. HOWEVER (and this is what changed my mind), LSU isn't guaranteed to kick a FG here. In fact, I think it is highly likely Miles runs it on 4th down.

1) That's an extra down LSU gets to ice the game (wouldn't do this at midfield after a punt)
2) Turnover on downs and Wisconsin still has to go 90+ yards for a TD

Yeah, the OP mentioned this as a possibility.

ETA: You are right.

I would choose (D) I wouldn't post . Because it makes no sense to wonder what a coach thinks.

How about taking a safety and then you are down 6 points and have to kickoff/punt. Field position "could" have been better and maybe force a turnover on kickoff/punt coverage. I would say Wisc. did as good as they could with ball on LSU's 35 yard line after the punt. They just needed to stop us from getting 1st down to have a chance and that didn't happen. Kneel the ball would be the last thing any good coach would do.

Run out the back of the endzone is another option. You'd be down 6 kicking off, hopefully getting a stop and a miracle TD drive in the end.
