In my biography earlier I left off that he did the same thing for the Miami Dolphins he did in high school. He uprooted Miami's starting running back Jimmy Johnson before the pre-season was over his rookie year.

Eta: The same thing was going to happen at LSU had he not gotten in trouble.

The Dolphins RBs sucked so that helped but Cecil had the lowest YPC(3.2) of all of them that year.

He broke his leg against Vandy, trouble came in the offseason.

However, you can watch one game and know the kind of running back the Diesel was, this man was the best LSU ever had. Just look at Cecil's performance against Auburn in 1997:

Look at Rondell Mealy's performance against Notre Dame that same year. OMG GOAT. Again, it was one game. And no, nothing Collins did was any better than what Fournette has done is several games. ANd Auburn was a good team but it's not like they had the most daunting defense in the conference or anything. They gave up about 20 points and 350 yards per game in 1997

If Cecil could have stayed off of LMN, yes, he would have been better than Fournette and Faulk.

you're basing this off a few games. again, you cannot just assume he'd have been able to replicate that over a season or even a career.

Good point about the Dolphins rb's.

My main point was, even after the injury against Vandy he went to McNeese and played well, then performed at the highest level.

Without getting booted from LSU, he'd have come back from the injury and reclaimed his spot the next season.

i think you mean JJ Johnson. And Collins actually had a lower ypc than him. The dolphins run game was abysmal. 3.2 ypc isn't exactly blowing away your competition

he played in like 2 games for McNeese. he was kicked off the team at mcneese september 15, 1999. And they're division 2. I hope a good division 1 back can perform at a high level against that competition

On a side note, he has a son. LSU needs to get that kid over for an official visit when he starts pee wee football.

A good number of the 30 for 30 series are stories no one would care about otherwise

Thing about Cecil Collins is people outside LSU and maybe some in the SEC don't know who he is. With Dupree and Clarett they at least had national attention.

here's just a few I'm referring to:
The Loyola Marymount Basketball team of the late 80s
Andres Escobar Colombian Soccer player
Matt Hoffman BMX biker
1982 Little League Baseball team from Kirkland
Terry Fox running across Canada
Nascar driver from the 80s Tim Richmond
Renee Richards transgender athlete
Sports agents Peter Greenberg and Eugene Lee
Chuck Wepner, boxer loosely based on Rocky
High school bball player Chris Herren (similar story to Collins)
Dewey Bozella, a 26 year prison inmate who became a boxer while in prison
speed skater Johann Olav Koss
Ben WIlson, high school bball player murdered in the 80s
surfer Eddie Aikau

there are more. If a director can write a compelling story for a documentary, the popularity of the subject matter doesn't really matter

I think that'd be a great one to do.

Yeah, and so would one about Johnny Jones.

But really, the dude seems to have turned his life around, so good for him. It'd have to be a 30 for 30 short film though. Don't see how you could make it long.

If you watch Collins' Auburn performance and then watch Fournette's performance against Auburn in 2015, and tell me Fournette is the better of the two, I question your football IQ.

People forget that he ran the then current All American (and future NFL journeyman with multiple Super Bowl rings) RB Kevin Faulk off to ride the pine before Collins broke his leg.

Incorrect. Cecil was ineligible for the opener against Houston. Meanwhile, Faulk was injured in that same game. Game two vs, Miss State and game three vs. Auburn was a healthy and evenly-divided dose of Collins and Mealey. Collins and Faulk played in one WHOLE game together and that was Akron. A week later, Cecil was out with the broken fibula. SO, HE DID NOT FORCE KEVIN FAULK TO RIDE ANY PINE OF ANY KIND. And You shouldn't claim anything to that degree.

quote:

He didn't do that in four games against crappy teams. He did that by impressing the coaches more than Faulk could every day in practice.

Akron and Vandy are two of those games -- one of which he went out early in due to the injury. You could be Kendall Cleveland for all I know but you do not have a clue of what you are saying. You also are using vague measuring data. Perhaps Cecil would have beaten out Faulk, but do you really think "riding the pine" is what would have happened (and it didn't). Rondell still got 2 touchdowns in the MSU game and 100 plus against Auburn. I wouldn't call that "riding the pine", so there is no telling how Faulk would have been used with Cecil in MEANINGFUL games.

quote:

The four games just validated what the staff saw every day in practice.

MSU, Auburn, Akron (who he scored against on his first carry...missed much of the 2nd half), and 1.5 quarters against Vandy where he barely gained a yard validate beating out your best returning RB who had rushed for appx 2,100 yards in 2 seasons and was INJURED while Cecil did what he did? Let's just say Cecil played in two meaningful games and that was it. By the way, I still think he is the best RB to ever carry a ball for any team. But all that you just stated is hogwash and made-up due to lack of memory and putting it together how you want to.

And please look up Journeyman. That wasn't Faulk. A 3rd down back doesn't make you a "journeyman".

What about a 30 for 30 on Kamala the Ugandan Warrior?

Its more tragic.

You mean the Ugandan Giant?

And I know his story and can sum it up well. Truck driver out of MS. One of the most misused and abused wrestlers once he got to Vice from WCCW out of Dallas. He is why I would never ever put my faith in a business like wrestling. He wrestled as the heel (and often the loser) in some huge matches. His purse was always the smallest.

Yes

tragic:

On November 7, 2011, Harris had his left leg amputated below the knee due to complications of high blood pressure and diabetes, a condition he has had since 1992, but not accepting dialysis treatment, forcing him to retire.[27] In April 2012, his right leg was also amputated below the knee and a campaign was launched seeking donations to cover his financial needs.[28][29]

Harris told Bleacher Report in 2014 that he relies on a disability check, sells handmade wooden chairs, and recently wrote a book about his life

Auburn's rush D that year was good though. They gave up just a little over 100 yards per game rushing and were a top 25 rush D. Cecil went for over twice the amount they gave up per game. Mississippi State also had a top 20 rush D that year and he ran all over them too.

It's true that you can never tell if an RB will have sustained results though. Justin Vincent had an awesome freshman year and was never able to play like that again. So yeah, you never can tell. Cecil's potential was through the roof though and I've seen very few backs come out of the backfield like that dude did.
