Would Miles ever punt on third down?

That old pic that I saw on the RANT today of Mike the Tiger and "The BEAR" brought back memories of a game in Tiger Stadium where Bear Bryant had 3rd and very long because of penalties and his QB/punter caught LSU off guard and punted. It rolled about 20 or 30 more yards after an average punt that netted about 65 yards. I think this is a lost art and most coaches are scared to use it because "nobody else" does it. You think Miles has this play with JJ or JL at QB to punt on third and 30? Stranger things have happened.

I remember when that was not so uncommon. The game has changed and as it has, this type of play is no longer.

I bet Jefferson could get a good kick.

1. You need to be in a game where field position is important
2. You need to do it as a "surprise" to try to maximize field position change
3. You would have to be in 3rd and very long so the possibility of actually getting a 1st down is slim
4. You need a QB who can actually punt
I remember the Eagles did it once with Cunningham. They were in a 3rd and long from inside there 20. They ended up getting like a 70 yd punt with the roll. Cunningham actually was the emergency punter over the K from the Eagles (This was mentioned after he punted on the broadcast).

In the Paul Deitzel ans McClendon years LSU frequently punted on 3rd down for a very good reason. The defense and the punt return game was so good a 3rd down punt frequently improved field position by 15 to 20 yards. Third and 7 at the 30 quickly became 1st & 10 at the 45.

I don't think we'll get to any unmanageable 3rd downs though anyway, pretty disciplined squad.

I don't know that Miles would do it.. but I personally love plays like this that are "outside of the box".
When you'd mention something like this, the first response is always "NO! What are you stupid"?
But when you actually sit down and think about it, sometimes a play like that are actually a pretty good idea.
This is one reason that I never ever count out ideas that are "outside of the box" just because it isn't conventional.

If someone did this and it didn't work out the fans would be calling for his job. It would be a very risky move.
