#1 national seed
Overrated. The last #1 seed to win it all was Miami in 1999.
All I want is a top 8 seed and I think we all but wrapped that up already.

not true, its based on geography
Like top seed Miami last year getting paired with the Ann Arbor regional? Yes, there are some geographical leanings for sure, but the top seed is usually not going to be paired with an RPI 9/10 type of team.

That looks better
Seriously though, why not pitch Ross? What if for some freak reason we lose the first two games of the SECT? Then Austin hasn't pitched in two weeks...definitely a bad scenario there.

ok, so another way to look at it. LSU starts Ross and we lose game 1. Then who knows what happens in game 2 (that's baseball) and we happen to go 0-2 in the SECT while Ole Miss and Florida have strong showings.
Does LSU still have a national top 8 seed? Probably better than 50% chance, but I'd rather not find out the hard way.
Ranaudo and Coleman need to pitch in the SECT. Period.

They both could pitch thursday, Mainieri mentioned it as a possibility.
Another way to look at it is Ross is going to have to pitch in some big games down the stretch anyway, might as well get used to it. I'd rather not risk Ranaudo pitching on less rest than usual, he doesn't pitch well in those situations.

I said this yesterday. That's the only scenario that can possibly take a top 8 seed from us.
If Ross loses game one, then we go with Coleman. He's not likely to have back-to-back bad games.
The SEC tourney is not the time to overextend any pitcher unless you're trying to get into a regional.

I think a Ross, Bradshaw (who only threw 30 pitches Saturday), and Ott scenario should be plenty good enough if we swing the bats like we're capable of.

True. I guess I will hope for Ole Miss and Florida both to implode in the process. Then LSU can tinker more in the SECT.
UGA went 0-2 last year at the SECT and still got a national #8 seeding. Of course, they and LSU were the only SEC contenders for national seeds.

I like starting someone other than Coleman or ranaudo however if you start Coleman or ranaudo tomorrow and keep them on a pitch count they could come back sunday if we get there
Posted on 5/18/09 at 11:51 am to clamdip
IMO, I think you start your #1 guy for the first game no matter who the opponent is. The most important thing is to win the first two games, so you don't have to go to the losers brakcet early.
Skip did this every year in postseason, and we all know about his 5 championships in 10 years.

if LSU gets to Sunday in the SECT, then all bets would be off, imo. It'd be nice to win, but probably some guys who need a little more seasoning would see the field at several positions.
As for pitching, there would only be 4 days rest before the Regionals start on the following Friday.

Not true. One year that jumps out at me is 1993 (I think?) when Skip started some rag-arm in game 1 of the Regional and we were smoked by Kent State.

It was necessary for us to win the SECT last year, I think we can all agree we have bigger goals this year. With our lack of depth on the mound, making the SECT championship game might be more of a negative rather than a positive.

skip didn't pitch his #1 in the first game of regionals his last few years

I can see Florida imploding, but Bianco has had pretty good SEC tourney success as of late. I think OM needs Bittle to make it to the championship game. If Bittle can't pitch, then I don't think they make it that far. And I know Irwin has pitched pretty good for them as of late, but he's still not close as the level of Bittle.

Bittle, Irwin, Pomeranz is a stout 1-2-3.

Skip didn't place much emphasis on winning the SEC tourney. He wanted to play enough games to get all his pitchers some work. But he didn't start any starter more than once. I think Skip only won 3 tourneys, not counting those wacky divisional tourneys.
In the regionals, he didn't start his ace or his #2 guy. Ben Saxon started the 2000 regional over Brian Tallet and Hunter Gomez. Prior to that, we had the old 6 team format where he did the same thing. It made no sense throwing your ace against the 6 seed.
Skip knows baseball.

Apparently Ross is going to pitch, if we are going to win the tournment. If he is our weakest pitcher, of the three, why not start him against the weakest opponent, Vanderbilt? Doesn't that improve his chance of winning?

if we lose we could still win two with ranaudo and coleman.then we could pitch bradshaw in the 4th game.i like the idea but ive got some guts.i coached a little 11-15 year old team and thats how i would teach them.my baby brother played on that team and hated me but til this day he would say he appeciated what i did for that team.
this is awesome, fwiw imho
