I suggest the media get together and agree to not cover SEC games which have the limited access restrictions imposed, including not broadcasting network carried games on ABC, CBS and NBC. In other words a media organized black out.
The SEC will cave in quickly, IMO.

I understand sports2's issue, but they just want people to use their site and not local news sites to get these videos. I like the idea of having access to such a large collection of videos in one place. Of course they're going to limit competition.

Doesnt surprise me. In radio, the record labels now want radio stations to be charged for playing music per play.
Radio promotes the artist they have?? WTF?
Do we blame this on Bush or Obama?

i'm sorry, but i think no beer at the SEC championship game is worse
Has that always been the case? Because I could have sworn I remembered getting hammered at the '03 one. Maybe that was just the beer from before the game editing my memory.

I think the point is that it's assuming control over an area that is generally regarded as free.
It is starting with the internet, they figure because it's new media they can control web content, there are not big players there to fight it, like there are with newspapers and televisions.
The SEC or whomever really assumes control over their content and then restricts everyone else, unless they play by their rules. You see it creeping into television now with the NFL Network game, unless you're willing to pay for the network you don't see the game. Assume the same case is now implemented in college football. Of course you would pay for the channel because it's worth it to you, but would you be willing to pay for talk radio, for basic news services, for sites such as this, for espn.com.
The control the cheese, how far are you willing to chase it.
I think the point is how willing are you to give up basic freedoms that we either take for granted or expect. Too much regulation, is usually a bad thing.
In the end it's all about money, and I feel they will not do as good a job of covering the games, practices, or press conferences because they will not have a vested interest in it. Coverage will be uniform and even for all the schools, your LSU coverage will be as good as you Vandy coverage and so forth.

Next thing, they will be cracking down on those youtube videos that people are making for LSU.
You could foresee something like this coming when LSU created the GeauxZone.
I think this stinks.

These are after all public Universities, if you are going to allow camera's in there, then why restrict the free publicity they provide.
It would certainly change the way my job is conducted. It basically ends the practice of revisiting old games and looking at old highlites.
They are doing it because of this...

quote:Actually, I'm with Indiana Tiger on this one: this move is about as far from socialist/communist/liberal ideology as you can get. This is a huge private corporation exercising its property rights to deny the general populace free public access to its valuable property.

That's free market, laissez-faire capitalism at its best.
Which is why I'm all for them being able to do it, even if it pisses me off.

Sports2,
I'm glad that I provided you with a convenient portal to express your thoughts on this, but I really don't have a dog in this fight. I simply wanted to bring attention to a manifestly ignorant statement.

No problem, happy to obliged.
While I think the above statement may apply to the game footage, the press conferences, post game interviews and practices are not ticketed events, so therefore why should the have dominion over what we say and do with that footage.

so what, no more highlight videos on youtube?!?
Posted on 8/7/09 at 8:08 pm to Honkus
Certainly there should be no legal obstruction to prevent the SEC from marketing their product as they see fit. I just think it's a short sighted
poor business model, and it will crimp my style, cause I ain't paying for what their selling!!

This new policy is the epitome of "kicking someone while they're down," and that someone is the media industry. Tell companies who buy commercial time on TV news broadcasts that LSU highlights can't be shown anymore. That's real great for ratings, which are used to sell commercials. Even newspaper Web sites are selling commercials on their videos now, helping to boost revenue in a down time. I really hope the SEC thinks twice about this, or there's going to be an ugly legal battle coming forth. They need to re-think this policy and try again next season. Somebody needs to let the air out of the SEC's head.

that sucks. this is ALMOST as bad as allowing Arky to join
Posted on 8/7/09 at 9:28 pm to Jaketigger
the SEC has invented a progam that makes all highlights disintegrate after 72 hours
