re: Will we ever have a featured "go to" back at LSU?

TheEye has a great post about this. We will have a featured back when one stands out. If one of our studs shine, he will be the next Hester. Injuries at TB are the norm. Its nice to have a few weapons.

I hope we have some two TB sets where there is the threat of either of two backs running. #32 and #34 are going to surprise some people. So many fans are too hyped on speed.

I guess what I am getting at, is I hope to see more of Miles/Crowton going with the hot runner. If Murphy goes 5 runs for 80 yards and a score in the first half against Auburn, I hope he gets more than two carries in the second half
you make a good point, but if we are winning i could care less if T-Bob Hebert is running the ball.

Totally agree. I know it's difficult for defenses to stop the variety of RBs LSU has, but if one RB is having a great half, Miles needs to stick to that RB and let the hot RB continue to play. Charles Scott comes to mind, not just against UK, but a few games last season he came in and ran for a 10+ yard gain, only to be never heard from again.

In the SEC you need multiple weapons, just like the NFL. How would the Saints be without Deuce, Reggie, and Stecker?

LSU has always had a stable of ridicubacks. Its kind of our trademark (besides the whole DLU thing weve got going on right now).
But basically we dont need one back. we have 4 or 5 guys who could easily be that "featured back" at other schools, but theyre all getting airtime.

In my opinion the only game in Addai's career at LSU that he was completely healthy was the Peach Bowl against Miami, and we saw what he did in that game.
He pretty much beat Florida all by himself. That was his greatest game as a Tiger imo.

You shouldn't use the Anti Flynn spin posted on bulletin boards to base your opinion.
Addai was the leading rusher in the SEC after six games in the 05-06 season. Apparently he was injured in the North Texas State game.
His rushes and yds for the season:
16-109 vs Ariz St.
16-84 vs Tenn
17-86 vs Miss St
24-102 vs Vandy
32-156 vs Florida
24-105 vs Aub
Then he was injured vs North Texas State.
There were no stats vs Appy State.
2-4 vs Alabama
14-70 vs Ole Miss
There were no stats listed vs Arkansas and he didn't play much in the SECC game.
4-7 vs Georgia
24-130 vs Miami
The performance by Addai vs Miami was about typical of his performance when he was healthy in the first six games of the season.

Unless LSU signs the next coming of Adrian Peterson or Bo Jackson, I say no.
You have to be a player from a big-conference program (or Notre Dame) to have a chance to win.
Said teams attract multiple above average to great players, and the RB position is no exception.
Why run an above avg. RB 25-30 times a game to the point of exhaustion for 12 games if you can split carries among 2-3 equally talented above avg. RBs and keep them fresh and effective throughout the game?

Other than Toefield, I'd say Kevin Faulk in '96.

Toefield in '01?
Toe split carries with Dominic Davis and Davis picked up the slack when Toe got hurt, which was pretty often. I'm pretty sure neither of them broke 1,000 yards rushing. The only one to do that in the last ten years was Faulk in 96, 97, 98, Vincent in 03 and Hester in 07.

+1
even though he didnt get the 20 + carries a game that a ''featured back '' gets. when it was crunch time, or when we needed a big play, hester was getting the ball. that to me is a featured back

The average career length for an NFL running back isn't very long as it is. I think it benefit's the college RB to come into the league with less wear and tear on his body than had he been a featured back in college. Featuring one back, for the most part is a thing of the past at both levels. LSU has been ahead of the curve.

Toefield was very close to eclipsing 1,000 yards. He finished with 992 yards and 19TDs in 2001. He easily would have had over 1,000 yards and would have broke the SEC record for rushing TDs in a season if he was not injured against Tenn.

Toe is 7th all-time in carries in a season (230), 6th in career (511) and 5th in carries per game *(16.48).

Who cares if we have a featured back or not? The bottom line is winning, and we've been doing a whole hell of a lot of that this decade so far without a featured back.
I'm OK with how things are going. Why fix what ain't broke?
