From a strength of schedule standpoint (BCS ramifications), is LSU better off playing UL-Lafayette or McNeese?

In polls ULL easily. No matter whether or not McNeese beat ULL <insert sportswriter from california or illinois> will look at McNeese as a negative for being 1AA.

App. St. is the only 1-AA school that does not carry this stigma.

McNeese might be the better team, but people see ULL as more valid.

There was a rumor going into the 03 season that we were going to schedule Mcneese. Skip could have justified it if they would have won the 02 1-AA national championship. There was an article about it in the lake charles paper at the end of that season. I believe we played western illinois instead.... Being from lake charles I would love to see this match-up to prove to all the ignorant fans that mcneese could not hang with the tigers.

I'm not going to get into an argument of who is better since it doesn't fricking matter.

Even in computer rankings ULL is ranked 60ish spots ahead of McNeese.

182 Louisiana-Lafayette
242 McNeese State

Tulane is ranked even higher than ULL.

Exactly, I'd rather see them playing 1-A teams for strength of schedule reasons alone. I'd hate to see LSU get shafted from a national title game because they played McNeese rather than Tulane.

no doubt McNeese is very often better than the D-1 crap schools in La. but it doesn't matter b/c beting them is still irrelevant. and LSU would do it too easily for it to be amusing.

Stromile Swift hit the nail on the head. It ain't necessarily because LSU fans perceive McNeese as a sucky failure of a football team...well, actually, some of the fans do, but it's more because they're I-AA. And the reason that's bad isn't "I-AA sucks" but "I-AA is really bad for strength of schedule."

Actually, I respect what McNeese has accomplished at their level. I think a team like UL-L could also benefit from dropping down in competition. IMO there are too many I-A football programs given the size of the state. I'd rather experience success at a lower level (ex. McNeese) than just constantly sucking it up at a higher level (ex. UL-L).

You forget $.

As long as you are 1-A you can whore yourself out for money from big time CFB programs every year.

mcneese has whored around too!!

they've been to texas a&m, miami, were going to play washington, and are going to chapel hill to open the season.

The two computer rankings I found had McNeese way ahead of ULL.

Sagarin: McNeese 100 ULL 137
Massey: McNeese 98 ULL 143

I guess I somehow pulled up the Sagarin's for 06.

Either way you should note this is after a year where McNeese went 11-0 and ULM is still above them and tech(who we did play only a few spots below).

That also doesn't change the fact that media perceives all 1-A teams to be > all 1-AA teams except App st.

Definitely, but being a 1-A team almost always gives more cash and makes to easier to find matches.

Correct. If McNeese would have won the I-AA national championship game that year against Western Kentucky, they were going to schedule McNeese. The reason that was needed to justify it is Southern basically. And if McNeese would have been national champions, they could have justified it to all the other I-AA state schools. They don't want to have to hear all the other schools whine basically, so whichever I-AA in the state wins the national championship will probably get to play them.

I have a question....

Why is it people laugh about this like this would be the equivalent of playing a Delta St, or some shitty team from up north, while at the same time giving credit to App. St. for coming into Baton Rouge?

Because in the media and the polls App st. is ranked noticeably higher than mcneese.

Man, just to think the opener with Texas Tech was a major possibility. That would have been fun, but it would have been scary with two new corners. Having said that, I'd trade for that matchup over App State in a heartbeat. The App State game would have even less appeal if it weren't the season opener.

That's about as far as I got....

I know better. Kinda disappointing that people will think that App. St. is soooooooo much better of an opponent than McNeese, but in reality they are both perennial Top 5 teams in I-AA.
