What was LSU ranked going into the SEC championship in 2007? We had two losses and I want to say we were 7th or so.

That early domination of Virginia Tech put us in the title game. It mattered a lot more than poll position.

This year's schedule is a perfect example of why scheduling the right OOC games is a great thing.
- We play a great team first week, so we're operating at high efficiency right out of the gate.
- We get NWS (basically a high school team) or second week to finetune our passing game and basically have a rest week before the short week vs. Moo State.

If LSU is a race with a one or even two loss teams this win will be a great tie-breaker. See 2007

Should the system formally reward big OOC wins?

Keep in mind that human polls are based on how voters perceive how good teams are. If you believe that OU is the best team in college football, then why should LSU beating Oregon change your perception?

As the year progresses, voters do begin to reward teams for these wins and often refer to it as a team's "Body of Work". This got Florida in the MNC in 2006 over Michigan IMHO.

yep, LSU was 7th. I think Les Miles is still paying Wannstedt under the table for that one...

Does it matter then? Did it matter in 2005 when we got sent to the peach bowl because we lost the SECCG? The thing is, it really truly does matter at all times and especially at the end.

In 2005, blame the voters for nut-hugging a 2-loss Notre Dame team for us not making a BCS game. I guess the Cap One bowl didn't want us in back2back years but I have no clue how Bama got the Cotton Bowl nod over us considering they lost their last 2 games of the season...

So what about 2005 when LSU was unfairly punished and went to the peach bowl. The downside is significant if you lose these types of games. The upside in 2007 was the benefit of the doubt in the title game. 2007's benefit was only because teams lost in the final week. So let's look at this poll. If we didn't play bama and the top three win out, if you would make the adjustment at the end of the season to move us above one or both of the higher ranked teams based on this win, why not do it today?

It would be ludicrous that an undefeated SEC champ would be left out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tell that to 2004 Auburn. Again perception. Even I thought OU and USC were better than Auburn that year. I guess if Auburn had a big OOC win to go along with the SEC ship, I could have changed my mind about their #3 ranking.

I am content ranked 3rd. We have a hard enough schedule as it is. I really don't want that #1 target on our back. We have many tough games before bama but If we meet undefeated it could be a better match up than the BCSNCG.

And are you actively ignoring how we leapt over multiple teams that won to get in the title game in 07 in no small part because of a top OCC game?

Beating VT in 2007 gave us a solid leg up in getting to NC game.

If recent history shows us anything, the game that decides the SEC West is usually more entertaining than the BCSCG(at least last years was close but the Bama v Auburn game was much more interesting to me)

You're not too bright, are you?

Stop arguing and read the replies to your post. It doesn't matter what the AP says today, or if we leap Bama or not today. It's all about the BCS rankings, and ONLY about that. This quality win is our "get out of jail free" card that gives us a little cush if we have a close loss to Bama. Stop whining about these pre-BCS polls--they're almost as worthless as pre-season polls. Read the patient explanations in response to your OP, learn something, and STFU.

Who knows if Oklahoma slips up it could be 1 vs 2. That will be a war!

Being in Dallas playing a top five opponent with a little worry in my heart that I usually have in November and not the first game in September was worth every penny.

I would much rather play another Oregon next year than North Texas. This week is going to be a letdown for those of us that made the trip to Dallas - other than getting to see some new players in the 2nd half.

No. My point was if you would do that at the end of the season, why wouldn't you do it today?

It seems people are accusing me of saying 2007 didn't happen. My points short and sweet are:

-if you would reward a team at the end why not do it at the beginning

-if a win over a top five foe won't move you above over any team but the team you beat, why schedule it with such a high down side?

-should the system formally reward big wins to make good teams play each other?

-should the system penalize bad games so that the Bama win over Kent State is not worth the same as a victory over a top five opponent. When Bama and Oklahoma stay above LSU, I perceive it as saying what they showed on Saturday was as good as what LSU did.

-If the top three were from different conferences (as they were in 2004) how would you settle it and shouldn't the rankings be more fluid to allow for big wins regardless of when they happen? Why should a team be locked into a high ranking especially early in the season when other resumes are more impressive.

-I am glad we were the beneficiary of a 2007 victory but none of you recognize the downside of that game when you bring 2007 up because we obviously won.
