Why not pay a solid coach less and invest more in NIL and assistants?

Here’s a thought — instead of throwing another $100 million at a “name brand” coach, why not take a smarter, more balanced approach?

Hire a proven but lesser-known coach — someone hungry, accomplished, and adaptable — and pay him around the NFL average for head coaches (about $6.6 million/year). Then, use the rest of that money to:

- Boost NIL funding so we can actually compete for and retain top players

- Increase pay for assistant coaches to attract and keep elite coordinators and position coaches

It’s crazy how much we’ve tied up in one guy’s contract when the modern game is won by depth — in both roster and staff. Wouldn’t a better use of resources be building a complete, well-supported program instead of overpaying one figurehead?

Curious what others think — why wouldn’t this model work at LSU?

Any coach who can put together the best roster and manage it with great assistant coaches would be fine.

Our assistants are already paid top dollar.

Isn’t what a school pays in NIL “capped”? Isn’t what boosters can do directly regulated now?

I am for finding a top coach. Proven or up and comer, it doesn’t matter, but the HC is key.

Brilliant!

I bet no one has thought of that, or tried it.

We already do. That is not an issue.

We pay extremely well for assistants. Kelly just made a bad decision with Sloan.

That's simply not how athletics at a school considered a top 3 job in the country works. If you want a coach, especially a hot name coach, you're probably going to have to let them name their price, buyout included.

I know everyone wants Kiffin right now. You think there's any chance that his agent is going to let him come to LSU for less money than Kelly got 4 years ago?
