Why LSU Needs to Run on First Down Against Ole Miss

We have a better chance of picking up 4-5 yards on first down if we make our blocks than we have of completing a pass against a 9 man front. If we are passing, we are only throwing in the 5-15 yard range on first down and the whole defense is in that area. Jennings struggles completing short passes. We can't go deep every pass.
We need to get into 2nd and 5 or so and not get into 2nd and 10. There is a higher chance of an incomplete pass on first down than there is of getting no yardage running the ball. So, running on first down is the better play.
A no gain on first is the same as an incompletion, but the chances of a gain are higher than the chances of completing the pass.
We need to run on first and then pass on 2nd or 3rd.

Why LSU Doesn't Need to Run on First Down Against Ole Miss

Throwing incomplete passes or getting sacked is even easier to stop..

We've had 3 weeks of bowl preparation, one bowl game, an entire spring practice/game period, summer drills, fall camp, and now 8 weeks of a college football season to develop a serviceable passing game. Shame on the coaches for neglecting it.

They will never see that coming.

I agree but we need to mix it up and run out of 3-4 wide, misdirection with the read option, etc.
then pound them between the tackles. If we try to do that first, we likely get nada - although if you woulad have asked me prior to this season i would have said we should win against loaded boxes. But thats just not the case.

I don't think that the coaches have neglected the passing game. I think that our QBs can't execute it.

LSU ran the ball extremely well on first down against AU. How'd that work out for "opening up the pass on 2nd and 3rd down"?
I think it's time to accept that there is no "opening up the pass" with this team.

I would really love to see us come out on a 4 wide spread formation to start it with Jennings in the shotgun an run out of that formation. That would have worked against MooU better than what we did. Im sure well come out in a double tight I formation, but i'd like to see us try something different. Hell you're at home against the #3 team in the country with 2 loses, you don't have much to lose.

this is the right answer. if jennings can't execute this strategy, get him outta there.

Of course we only have one running play in our playbook, called "run." And it's always blocked the same way, out of the same formation, with the same halfback reads. So obvious! So easy to stop!

In Les' ten years here what has he done to make you think he won't run on EVERY SINGLE FIRST DOWN. I'm not a Les hater at all. I'm just saying I think you're preaching to the choir. For better or worse Les will be Les.

We aren't going to be facing 9-man fronts.

Jennings is an inferior passer. Harris can hand the ball off too. I wonder if Ole Miss is going to double Dural going deep since that is the only route Jennings is capable of looking at and executing?

Let's hope so. Then we can run all over them all night long.
