Why is Jerry Stoval so forgotten as an All-time LSU great?

His name is almost never mentioned. Obviously, this is inspired by his induction to the CFB HOF, but I've wondered this for years. I am a an avid LSU fan and am a fellow West Monroe High School alumnus, but I don't think I even knew he played at LSU until I was in high school. I only knew him as the Tech AD and former LSU coach. Strange that he's such an afterthought.

My uncle and I were actually having this discussion Saturday afternoon, and the only thing we can figure is the end his coaching left such a bad taste in everybody's mouth that they forgot just how great a player he was. Is that it?

He did play in the 60s which is a long time ago especially for the internet generation. Heck, given some of the stuff that gets posted here it seems most were'nt even 'aware' in the 90s.

To many, he should have won the Heisman that year over Terry Baker of Oregon State.

Probably. I, for one, think he should be celebrated because he got a lot of great recruits for future coaches...just didn't know that 2, if not all of them, would be idiots.

I think it's because there's no great moment that people know of to solidify his career, and that he followed up teams and players from 1957-59 (Jimmy Taylor, Billy Cannon, Johnny Robinson) that were more famous and had better pro careers.

The 1961 SEC co-title with Bama was good, but LSU in 1960-62 was beginning to be overshadowed by Ole Miss & Bama. Nobody looks back too fondly of teams that slide back into the middle of the pack from former glory.

In general, I think the whole era from 1960 to 1968 is sort of a "black hole" in the consciousness of the LSU fanbase.

I agree Doc...even though the '61 and '62 teams were darn good.

My dad actually thought Stovall was a better player than Cannon even though he watched him up close since high school.

No doubt. Perhaps the athletic department should do a better job of educating the younger fans and promoting/honoring some of the older guys. And not just bringing them out on the field every 10 years during halftime when most fans are not really paying attention. It might have an impact on a potential recruit to know that they will be becoming part of a lifelong family and not just discarded after their 4-5 years.

Granted, I don't have any great ideas on how to do this, but I haven't really put a whole lot of thought into it. Surely there are some creative and cool ways.

Because he sucked as a coach, plain and simple. He did leave a lot of talent, and Arnsbarger made good use of it. Archer his first year, then it ran out and the rest is history.

Great player, terrible coach except for recruiting Simple as that. Take the great player part out and who does that remind you of? Hmm, it's coming to me. Let me sEe now, who doeS that remind me of?

That 1982 team held Alabama to zero first downs in the first half on the way to a 20-10 win over the last Bear Bryant coached gump squad.

Bear Bryant said it was "the best beating we've had since the 60's."
