re: Why is it so difficult for LSU to develop a passing game?

THERE IS REMARKABLE RECEIVING TALENT ON THE LINE, AND THE SIDLINE... JUST MISUSED UNFORTUNATELY

We want a Top 5 NC caliber contending team, but that will not be done when right now we do not have a QB even in the Top 50 in QB ratings. Check it out for yourself.
Blake Sims is ranked #2 nationally. I know Amari Cooper is a big reason for it, but when it counts he connects.
Check out Brandon Harris QB rating. He's played 1 1/2 games and he's got 9 TD's to Jennings 6 all year.
We should have played Harris more earlier in the season & THEN we'd know who was better. The coaches trust Jennings more because he's delivered more.
Duh. When you get over 4 X's the attempts you'll:
A) Know the system better
B) Have better chemistry with the team
C) Have the coaches trust because you've proven you can make plays.
ALL THREE of these would be true if Harris had played 4X's more than Jennings.
PERIOD!!!!!!!

Correction Jennings has 9 TD's to Harris' 6 TD passes, but with 1/4 the attempts. What are we waiting for?

boxcar, you are a mouth breathing negatard.
Last year's offense was awesome. If we had last year's offense with this year's defense (the one with Beckwith at MLB), we would dominate the SEC.
Don't even try to respond because I don't value your retarded opinion.

BRO, WE HIRED A OC WITH PLENTY OF PRO STYLE OFFENSE EXP. THATS NOT THE PROBLEM
Posted on 11/12/14 at 11:54 am to Tigerik
IF OUR BELOVED COACH MILES WOULD HAVE STUCK WITH BRANDON HE WOULD HAVE WORKED THE KINKS OUT.... DOESNT MAKE MUCH SINCE TO PULL HIM JUST TO PUT IN AJ TO HAND OFF THE BALL 80% OF THE TIME? BRANDON COULD HAVE DONE THAT.

Stupid point
No it's not. We supposedly had this great O last year and what do we have to show for it? 9-3 and a trip to the Outback Bowl.
If our plan was to get to Atlanta, our O needed to be even better, not middle of the pack in the SECW.

You know you have to play defense too, right?

Young QB's and receivers attempting to learn a very complicated scheme(Coaches fault in my view)against quality competition = a struggle. Mett's second year in the system he flourished but it was his 5th year of college ball also. Jennings, and more likely Harris, will step up next spring and fall as well as the young receiving corps and the passing game will be a viable part of the offense once again.

The hat is the answer.

Miles is as old school as he can be, and the successes of the running-mostly-and-wear-them-out-in-the-4th-quarter plan makes him think it will allow him to continue to contend for a championship.

Yep.
But our D doesn’t always have its A-game. In those, it would be nice for the O to take up the slack. Les ought to have a feel for how a game will flow before it’s played, e.g., did he really think the State or Auburn games would be defensive struggles?
Analogy (that’ll break down somewhere but bear with me) – if Les were a golfer I don’t think he would ever hit a driver off the tee because he’s too concerned that he’ll hit it OB. In fact, I’m not sure Les would even carry a driver in his bag. That’s ok until the other golfers are smoking it 300+ yds and reaching par-5’s in 2. Then, we are at a distinct disadvantage.
That’s how I see it with our current approach to O.

Teams like Baylor, Oregon, A&M, etc. will always be at the top of accumulation stats (like total offense, passing yards, etc.) because they're uptempo offenses that pass a lot.
2013 Rushing Stats - Yards Per Game & Yards Per Attempt
LSU - 202.3 YPG, 5 YPA
Oregon - 273.5 YPG, 6.3 YPA
Baylor - 259.7 YPG, 5.4 YPA
2014 Rushing Stats - Yards Per Game & Yards Per Attempt
LSU - 221.4 YPG, 4.5 YPA
Oregon - 232.1 YPG, 5.4 YPA
Baylor - 230.9 YPG, 4.6 YPA
If you're just having a conversation about whose offense is more productive, I don't think it's fair to dock these guys for their scheme.

You mean like against UGA where we scored 41 points and had 450 yards of total offense?

quote:Obviously there is a difference, as last year's team was light years ahead of this year's team in terms of ability and experience. However while the Miss St. score looks great with 28 4th quarter points you can see that the offense started bogging down. There is no reason why the most talented offense in the country should be held to 17, 24, and 17 points in the last 3 games you list. As for the cupcakes, are you happy that we play like crap against them for the most part? Do you think that running an aggressive offense will show too much to Alabama?
That's a 10 point difference in PPG against quality opponents which is a pretty significant margin for a team that wants to hold the ball and control the clock all game. Do you really not see a difference between the two offenses?
quote:The biggest problem with that philosophy is that we DON'T run clock with a bad offense. I don't care if you run the ball all 3 downs vs. pass it all 3 downs, if you go three and out you can't "run the clock". Last year we were bailed by sheer talent which could match up to any offensive group in the country almost any year.
No one said it's gimmicky; it's just a totally different philosophy. Are you stupid or something? Les has been here since 2005, and you still don't realize that our offensive philosophy isn't the same as Oregon and A&M? We like to control the clock, run the ball, play great defense and dominate field position. Naturally, you aren't going to score as many points if you like to run clock as opposed to run uptempo. Say we score 10 more ppg, but we give up 10 more ppg. Does that make our offense any better?
quote:And there you have it. Somehow scoring more points means that we will give up more points. This is one of the most brain dead rationalizations on this board. Obviously if we score 10 more points than a couple of our drives will have lasted that much longer and the other team has less opportunity to score.
Say we score 10 more ppg, but we give up 10 more ppg.

Well, if the goal is to get to Atlanta, we have to plan on winning these type of games too. Points and yards aren't much consolation.

I've already proven that LSU did not have a middle of the pack offense in the SECW.
And by your logic, Texas A&M had a worse offense than LSU even though you said it was better earlier...

That isn't necessarily true.

What game did you watch this weekend?
We are 7th in the country and 2nd in the SEC in average Time of Possession. Last year we were 49th

College stats have a misrepresentation in favor of running QBs and spread teams for YPC since sacks count against rushing yards.
So the fact that LSU had 5 YPC with Mett's sacks included is pretty impressive
We averaged 5.7 ypc from our running backs
