John Emory was supposed to be that guy. We are still waiting.

Kaleb Jackson could be that guy.

It is not that we haven’t attracted highly rated recruits.

Emery based on ratings and stars was supposed to be that guy, but didn’t work out for several reasons.
Kevin Faulk’s evaluation skills were severely lacking.

For a good while now, I can't really conjure in my mind a team with one dominant RB. I can't think about the Reggie Bush era at USC without remembering how good Lendale White was on that team.

exactly!

Add that a few talented RB's have left the state....Etienne brothers come to mind, presumably because they were offered more playing time. LSU has always had a pretty stacked RB room.

One could argue Fournette was but didn't quite meet expectations. At least not mine.

Does anyone remember why we didn’t take Dylan Sampson? I believe he will have a breakout year this year with TN.

Ceh could perform in all 3 phases of the offense. That is what makes an offense deadly. When you can call a pass/run out of the same formation. When your rb doesn't come off the field.

3 wide/1rb/1 tight end. Basically operate in that the entire game.

This to me is the most exciting thing about Berry. If there’s ever been an LSU RB who was built to shift out into the slot, it has to be him.

Not only should he be perfectly capable of playing in the slot and spreading out/confusing the defense, he has potential to be a legit matchup problem when he does it.

Would love to see the staff get creative with him. Especially with the TE recruitment we’ve seen lately.

- 12 personnel (1 RB 2 TE) preferably with one TE who is a pretty good run blocker. If the defense sends out a 3-4-4 or 4-3-4 set, split Berry and a TE out wide into a 4 WR empty backfield look. If the defense sends out a nickel set, shift your blocking TE to the wing and run iso.

- 11 personnel (1 RB 1 TE) with a good pass-catching TE. Run basically any formation from 3-5 WR from the same personnel package (as we did in 2019 with CEH and Moss). Play with Berry’s alignment relative to the TE and other WRs to exploit matchups against LBs.

- 21 personnel (2 RB 1 TE). If the defense tries to line up in their base nickel set, pound them with iso/power. If they go into a 4 DB set, split Berry and the TE out wide in a 4 WR look. Or better yet, motion Berry to the slot, put him on a slant, and run RPO. Alternatively, send him on a tunnel screen from the slot.

So many possibilities with that kid, even if he’s not a traditional between-the-tackles RB.

1. Dual threat, so get it right a-hole.

2. Yes. A feafure RB and a running QB can work wonders:
2014 Ohio St national champ
RSFR QB 940 yards 5.5 ypc 11 TDs in 12 games
Zeke Elliott 1880 yards 6.9 ypc 18 TDs in 15 games

2019 Oklahoma Big 12 champ loss to Bama in playoff
Kyler Murray 1000 yards 7.15 ypc 12 TD
FR RB 1055 yards 8.9 ypc 12 TD
Trey Sermon 950 yards 5.8 ypc 13 TD

I could show plenty more, but this is just from some elite teams. Justin Fields and JK Dobbins. Marcus Mariota with Kenjon Barner year 1, Byron Marshall year 2, and Royce Freeman year 3.

If you want recency
2024 Drake Maye and Omarion Hampton
2024 Kaidon Salter and Quinton Cooley
2024 John Rhys-Plumlee and RJ Harvey
2024 Dequan Finn and Penny Boone
2024 Jaxson Dart and Quinshon Judkins (and add Zach Evans going back to 2023)

Many many more over the years.

1034 yards and 10 TDs at 5.53 ypc as a true freshman. Plus a KR TD
1953 yards and 22 TDs at 6.5 ypc in 12 games as a sophomore. Plus 253 receiving yards and another TD
In 7 games as a junior he had 843 yards and 8 TDs averaging 6.53 ypc

That kid was dominant despite decent at best run blocking, zero passing game to speak of, and a HC that would run him constantly into 8 man fronts.

If that 2015 game didn't get canceled he would have went over 2100 rushing yards with 24-25 rushing TDs. No other LSU RB would have come close. He only played 7 games in 2016 because of injuries and none of them were the cupcake games. His stats over a 13 game season would have been 1565 yards and 15 TDs. Those 3 year numbers would have put him around 4800 rush yards and 50 TDs. No other LSU RB would have come close in a 3 year span, and you can count on a few fingers the amount of SEC RBs that had that kind of production in a 3 year period.

The game has moved past a feature RB … I’d say multiple quality backs with pass catching abilities are more of an asset .
I wouldn't say moved past. Some teams just think the committee approach works better for health of RB depth.

Take for instance Clemson with Etienne. That was a feature back on an elite team.

Bama road Najee Harris to 1466 yards and 26 TDs in a 13 game national championship season in 2020.

Did you see what Michigan did in their 2024 national championship run with Blake Corum?

Washington was pass heavy, but ran a feature RB that carried the ball 233 times in 14 games with 1200 yards and 16 TDs

Texas lost Jonathan Brooks, but in the first 11 games he carried it 187 times for 1140 yards and 10 TDs. He averaged 17 carries a game. He was on pace for 238 carries if he played those 14 games Texas played.

Hell last season Diggs was the feature back at LSU before the injuries. From game 2 to game 6 he averaged 16.5 carries.

Kaleb only played one full year of varsity. Liberty played jv his freshman and sophomore years as they had just started the program back. Had a stellar he year And let the first year team to the playoffs, losing to st Thomas more in the second round. They moved up to 5a and lost their coach in the offseason. Then he rolled his ankle in his first or second game of senior year and really never came back. Not sure if was a lingering injury or if they just shut it down. I’ve heard both from people inside the program.

Not a good analogy. Dumb basically. Running qbs usually take catches away from feature receivers
Running qb refers to a qb that runs first, instead if throwing. It doesn't means he runs before handing off on a called running play
