I can promise you ,any rule you try to come up with in this game wont be a constant. the team that beat us yesterday is full of small school guys

It’s almost as if Johnson wasn’t able to outbid Tenn for their number 2 and like Johnson wasn’t playing for another title last season in 3 years.

This NOT the 80’s,90’s, 2000’s, 2010’s, or even just 5 years ago.
MLB shortened the draft after COVID, NIL, 16 teams in the conference, everyone is investing, etc.
it is MUCH MUCH tougher to win 1 much less 2 in 3 years without impacting the roster especially with the amount of pitching that was lost and their injuries. Cooper Moore was expected to carry a load and win 4 SEC games or so and he got to zero.
4 games is in the playoffs.
It isn’t that hard

good post. jay admitted that he leaned too heavily on the portal this year and it's great that he did so, but it just seems so obvious that building a team out of mercenaries you don't know is a worse way to build a team than leveraging LSU baseball to recruit the most talented kids to be developed by the best coaches in LSU baseball. i'm still shocked that he did it.

He had so many fricking drafted the last couple years AND THERE ARE ROSTER LIMITS NOW. frick people do the fricking math. He had OUTFIELDERS leave that were never going to start over Brown, Stanfield (who led the team in hitting last season in the SEC) and Curiel a first round pick.
Cooper Moore’s injury is the difference between being in and being out. If he pitches and wins 4-5 games people wouldn’t be wringing their fricking hands.
If anything pitchers like Noot, Williams, Guidry and Rizzy are pure shite this season. They HAVE BEEN IN THE PROGRAM WITH A GREAT PITCHING COACH.

Maybe.

Which SEC games do you think he would be a difference maker in? OM and maybe State? Obviously, the ripple effects can be considered (where pitchers are having to be used prematurely in lieu of Casan and him).

The flip side is that their absence has afforded others' opportunities and yet, there's hardly a single arm we can go to the bullpen and know what you're getting - maybe Cowan is the exception.

But it's not 2008 anymore. You don't have time to "develop" any of these kids. Like UT, Arkansas, UGA, A&M, State, and Tennessee are not pinning their hopes on development.

Of course they gave guys in their program (less so UGA) that have been there for more than a year, but those are almost always guys that hit in year 1.

If your freshman are not day 1 ready, you have to have perfectly timed transfers, and even that doesn't work out sometimes. For example, you bring in Dickinson last year because Ryan isn't ready. In a perfect world, Ryan waits to take over the 2B/3B job this year. Instead, he bolts because an ACC school is going to pay him a little more to play SS.

If anything, the freshman who come here are using LSU as mercenary/leverage plays. Who do you think NC State wants to pay? A guy coming from say UNO who has put togethet 2 semi productive years, or the guy who spent a year developing at LSU?

Luckily, it seems we have 3 sure fire hits in this freshman class in Ruckert/Braun/Serna. Patrick has shown promise. The arms have shown potential. Unless you get very lucky in the draft like UCLA a couple years ago, you're just not going to have a team full of home grown guys (and even they have big time portal contributors).

Also, Jay did use LSU to recruit the most talented high schoolers. We just happened to have the worst draft outcome in his time here in the 2025 draft.

Also also, the current itteration of this team is nearly entire home grown.

1. Braun
2. Serna
3. Curiel
4. Bide
5. Milam
6. Pearson
7. Ruckert
8. Patrick
9. Reaves

P. Schmidt
P. Sheerin
P. Guidry

The only guy who started yesterday that didn't start his career here, is a JUCO transfer. The only other guy that played that didn't start his career here is Sheerin, a multi year transfer.

You have to adapt. Jay has done a great job at that. It just so happens that this past season conflicted with the portal on an insane level, it was a generally weak portal class nationwide (outside of the UVA guys, but I don't count them as normal transfers), we had the second worst injury luck in Jay's time here, and we got smoked by the amateur draft.

Every weekend, because of

You'd be asking less of the entire bullpen every weekend.

Duly noted.

But we didn't win either of Moore's SEC starts. In fact, he got hit hard vs Vandy. And the tradeoff is that in his absence, other's get opportunities. And here we are. Our pitching staff is still a mystery.
