You have to stop comparing this team to teams from the past. This fast paced offense will keep the defense on the field more. Tonight they were on the field for 80+ plays. its going to take time to adjust to that.
This is a big part of it. They aren’t used to such an efficient and quick strike offense and they’re left on the field a lot more.
Couple that with a potential Heisman candidate at QB that they must contain in the pocket bc he’s dangerous on the run. This plus the heat had them completely exhausted.
They didn’t have a good night overall and there’s definitely some things that need to be fixed like finding a balance with the HUNH . I agree it’s alarming when the defense can’t get a stop in the 2nd half and get off the field on 3rd down. I think they will figure it out though.

Right, that stunt was called on two straight plays. But that was it. We went standard rush 95% of the time. He did not call a great game.

I didn’t see a lot of personnel mistakes in the 2nd half. I saw scheme and call mistakes.
I saw one on one matchups that favored LSU on paper not translate to winning plays on defense.
I’ll give you that Fulton got beat and Harris is not starting material, but we didn’t call a good game defensively in the 2nd H

We haven’t been shredded on that side of the ball since Malleveto.
2015 Kevin Steele (3 games in a row)
Vs Bama 30 points 434 yards
Vs Arkansas 31 points 420 yards
Vs Ole Miss 38 points 432 yards
2014 Chavis
Vs Miss St 34 points 570 yards
Vs Auburn 41 points 566 yards
Vs ND 31 points 449 yards
2013 Chavis
Vs UGA 44 points 494 yards
Vs Bama 38 points 372 yards
2012 Chavis
Vs Ole Miss 35 points 463 yards
In 2016 Aranda had ONE game where he allowed more than 388 yards or 21 points
In 2017 Aranda had ONE game where he allowed more than 384 yards or 24 points
In 2018 Aranda had FOUR games that he gave up more than 390 yards, but one of those games was 7 OTs, one was where the offense did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING vs Bama, and the other two he didn't allow more than 21 points.
You could add even more 400+ yard games during their times but I only pointed out the glaring ones
Go look at Bama's last 3 games of last year and Clemson when they face any good offense and tell me they didn't get shredded.
All this selective memory bullshite is getting tired from supposedly LSU fans who actually watch their team play.

When was the last time we gave up 31 in a half?
With elite talent and highest paid dc in the country

We played a decent 1st H vs. Texas.
The heat was real, and extreme.
That long 7+ min drive in the 3rd Q took a lot out of the D.
And, if we stop them on the 4th & 2 vs. giving up the score... this ends differently.
Texas is a good team. I'm happy with this win on the road in that heat tonight.

The top big 12 teams will score points no matter how good the defense is. I'm just glad that we finally have the firepower to prove that can win a shootout. Looking at the scores of the other SEC games vs the big 12 I don't see anything to be upset about.
LSU 45 Texas 38
Georgia 54 Oklahoma 48
Alabama 45 Oklahoma 34
Missouri 16 Texas 33
Georgia 21 Texas 28
The others were neutral site games. We went into Texas's back yard and took it to them.

In 2014 we gave up 31 points in the first half vs Auburn. We had TONS of talent and Chavis was top 3 if not the #1 highest paid DC.
Also, this doesn't even matter. Doesn't matter what half they scored points in, stop trying to reach. Aranda is as consistent as any DC in the country.
Bama last 3 games 2018
28 points 454 yards
34 points 471 yards
44 points 482 yards
Bama 2017
Really good this year
Bama 2016
30 points 473 yards
35 points 511 yards
43 points 522 yards
Clemson 2018
26 points 501 yards
35 points 600 yards
Clemson 2017
31 points 491 yards
Clemson 2016 (won the national championship at 14-1)
31 points (under 400 yards)
34 points 449 yards
35 points (under 400 yards)
36 points 568 yards
42 points 464 yards
You can do the same thing with teams like Michigan, Ohio St, Washington, TCU, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, etc, that have consistently good defenses (well except Ohio St last year). That's the whole point of needing a great offense to bail you out the couple times a year you face a high powered offense.

If you knew what you were seeing you’d know he had a great game plan.
- 4 man pressure for the most part
- no stunts.
- guys staying in there rushing lanes to contain Ehlinger
- expect the DBs to hold down the back end.
All of that worked until we started losing guys. Lawrence was out. Fulton wasn’t 100%. Delpit has issues and forgot how to tackle. Divinity and Phillips had blips in coverage. When we needed pressure at the end of the 2nd quarter we had back to back plays of 5 man pressure and a stunt with Chaisson and both got home. Aranda also knows he’s now got an Offense that will bail him out.
By the 4th quarter we literally had a front 4 of Brooks, Fehoko, Justin Thomas and Divinity. We were on our last leg for the 4th quarter.
They’ve got a month to get the D healthy and ready for the meat of the schedule. They’ll be fine.

Texas drove into our territory almost every drive in the first half. Under 2 min in 1st half we played aggressive and forced a 3 and out...then got a huge TD.
Texas should’ve scored more in the first half. Our best 2 defensive series were the one I mentioned and the second goal line stand after the interception...which only happened because their RB dropped a TD pass on prior series

Texas didn’t have answers for ours either. Takes time for defensive players to get used to quick offensive play. Less rest, less time to get coached up on sideline. Give them time I think we will be ok. You can practice it all week but game speed is totally different. :

An average of #11.

So on average, Aranda's defense is better than 119 of 130

Poor tackling killed his gameplan as well.
MANY times we had the UT guy in the backfield, or spotted for a potential short gain, and we would miss the tackle.
It got to the point in the game where I just expected the UT ball carrier to just run over our soft defense.
Coach O has figured out that you CAN scheme around a soft, weak, OLine. We have that part done.
Now we have to figure out how to fix a very soft defense. Hell, even Delpit was missing tackle after tackle.

This defense has been so hyped up with all of the returning starters. I think that contributed to some of the disappointment last night.
Texas was over 50% on 3rd down conversions.
It’s called the $ down for a reason. Aranda and the players have to get better here.
Ryan Clark absolutely predicted that the offense would have to carry the defense on ESPN radio in BR in order to beat Texas. He must have seen issues on defense at the scrimmages.

How does that negate what I said about the game plan? It was a passive game plan to make Ehlinger beat them with his arm. He played well so it didn’t work great.

Again, you’re making my point for me. That was the first Defensive drive where we got aggressive and it worked. The problem in the second half was that back breaking drive to start the 3rd quarter and the defense was hurt or gassed from there on out.
