Why I would have stuck with Ack

Yea, I know this is best to death.
He faced 3 batters (w/ an inherited runner, mind you)
He threw 16 pitches & got 5 swinging strikes. Yeskies pitch calling has just for whatever reason had issues finishing batters. Too many 1-2 counts this year have went the wrong way.
-They were not seeing him well.
-He was not tired.
- has pitched in big games
- Hellmers literally talked Johnson into leaving him in earlier.
Jay notoriously has trusted his guys when they’ve pitched well. Going to Jump was cute. And now you get the cop out excuse “well you had your best guy available.” I get it, but don’t love it. To me. Ack has to give you a reason to not bring him back out, and he never did.

Cook: got him 1-2. Two swinging strikes (K)
Ozuna: got ahead 1-2 one swinging strike (K)
Italian PH: back to back ugly swinging strikes (K)

Ack has given up a lot of HRs this season and they had a RH heavy lineup. Didn’t mind the change

Just going by how Acks slider was looking I think it wouldn't have been a bad option to ride with him.

I would have stuck with Ack simply because we didn't have anything after Jump. Let's say we catch the ball in the T10, we still didn't score. Who was going to pitch after Jump? In the end, it was an all or nothing decision. Jump didn't pitch poorly considering the circumstances either. UNC had a pair of jam shot hits with two strikes. But, there is credit to be given for putting the ball in play.
Ultimately, we went the last seven innings and got ONE hit.

Yep. On top of that, he was shakey sunday. Usually after a bad appearance like that, you get the bounceback. We had that bounce back and just didnt stick with it. Let ack get in trouble before going there

Their lineup for the most part was completely balanced.

Yeah u let Ack go until he gives up a runner
Ack was on one tonight. You could tell he had his good stuff and had that look in his eye. Ah well

I think sticking with Ack or going to Jump are fair and reasonable decisions.
I think Jay has very meticulous scripts that he sticks to, like starting Hurd in the 2nd UNC game no matter what, like he mentioned. I think Jump was the play before the game even started.

Ack has struggled with command all season. He couldn’t locate his fastball again tonight.
I’m guessing the coaches didn’t want to send out a lefty to flip sliders at their right handed guys.

He was dealing. U leave him in.

Furthermore, a teary eyed Johnson said Jump was giving them a different look; however, the players coming to bat had not seen Ack yet, so maybe Jay was just not thinking clearly in the post game.
It is one thing to have a nails closer in that situation, but to bring in a guy that has not pitched in that spot regularly is asking a lot, even for as talented as Jump is.
You had Ack rolling. That was your safest bet

Could not agree more

Ack only closed 2 games this season. It’s not a spot he pitches in much either.

He got the first two hitters to 1-2 count, and threw some pitches out of the zone thereafter to set them up.
On the 3rd batter he slipped off the mound & threw a ball. Went to 3-1. Then basically put him away with two swords.
Nothing about his stuff tonight really said he was having control issues.

I think it was a script he had drawn up ahead of time. If we were up by 1-2 late, guess Jump was always gonna be the play. Just felt likeyou have to rewrite it based on what you are seeing

It’s not like he threw fastballs that were slightly off. He was missing wildly.

Other than several wild misses, sure.

100%.

And let’s be fair, it’s not like Jump got tagged all over the park or couldn’t throw a strike. He wasn’t as sharp as you’d like I guess, but still plenty good enough.

I agree. In the postgame he said “we set this plan in motion before we came here” when speaking about going Hellmers - Ack - Jump
