What the...? This is ridiculous, LSU had NO claim in 1961. LSU was 10-1 and lost to Rice. Alabama was 11-0, were the SEC champions, won both UPI and AP polls and were consensus national champions in 1961, Bryant was both wire service coach of the year, etc.
LSU had NO claim in 1961. Google is your freaking friend.

I was curious as how someone said we should have claimed a title in 1961 one when in the back of my mind I knew Bear Bryant won one for Alabama?? College football was confusing back then with ranking champions !

It really wasn't that confusing... UPI (coaches) and AP had polls that determined NC .. before the bowl games which were regarded as exhibitions and treated as such. There were a couple of small polls and ranking systems that were not highly followed by that time.
1961 was Coach Bryant's first NC. It was consensus both AP and UPI. Ohio State was consensus second in 1961. LSU had a great year but lost to Rice and finished second in the SEC and 4th in the national polls.
Closest in polls was Ohio State which ran up the score in their last season game against Michigan, throwing the ball with 35 seconds left and going for two with time expired. Woody Hayes later got his azz kicked by Alabama.
Here is final AP poll from 1961.
1 < 1 Alabama (26) SEC 10-0 452 W 34-0 N Auburn
2 < 2 Ohio State (20) Big Ten 8-0-1 436
3 < 4 Texas Southwest 9-1 348
4 < 3 LSU (1) SEC 9-1 335
5 < 5 Mississippi (1) SEC 9-1 284

Yeah no telling how anyone thought we should have a 1961 NC title ?? I wonder how all of this ended up getting like this??

Yet I see Michigan claiming championships in 1901
Those "Point-a-minute' Teams were badass. They played Stanford in the first Rose Bowl and were leading 49-0 in the 3rd quarter when both teams agreed to stop the game.

The 1903 season should be claimed for real, but LSU will never pursue it.

Idk, that's great question. Everyone else seems to do it (ole miss, bama, etc...), so why not us? I saw it somewhere that we have 7 national titesx but we only claim 3 of them. Even on winsipedia it says we have 4 nattys. Idk what the deal is with that, but it's interesting.

Because LSU is not bama and we don't claim National titles on a whim and did not win.

In my opinion most titles prior to the BCS system are flawed and awarded by sports writers. No offense to the writers but the major markets dominate the voting and I am sure the teams awarded the title were very good but no way of really knowing the actual best teams.
Many years the #1 team played a weak schedule going undefeated while another team played 3 or 4 very good teams losing 1 game and out of the running.
The big Ten played the Pac team in the Rose bowl leaving out the whole country.
Why try to go there now

Because we aren't full of shite like Bama

No I just heard we might have won in 1962 I didn't necessarily know for sure
Posted on 8/19/17 at 9:50 am to ChollyMac62
The correct answer is "because we're not Bama"

Lsu claiming a championship in 1908 would be like Boise State claiming 2009. Sure, they had a good season, but they played weak competition and would have been crushed by Alabama or Texas. Likewise, Lsu would have crushed by Penn or Harvard in 1908. Remember, the Ivy teams were the powerhouses back then.

And yet Michigan never beat an East Coast powerhouse in that era. The point-a-minute thing is catchy, but they played weak competition in the Western conference (forerunner to the Big 10).

but I mean why not just claim 62 as a national title because look it was Charlie McClendons first year as LSU head football coach and we had a 9-1-1 record so why not??

Michigan lost to Penn in 1907 and 1908--the first time they faced an Ivy League team.
1901 Michigan team would have been soundly beaten by the Ivies, who were fielding professional players at that time.

I have criticized other schools including Ole Miss and Ala. for claiming bogus championships and 1962 would fall in to that category. 1908 would not. According to the rules that existed at the time, 1908 was legit.
