Why do NCAA refs punish the big strong guys for being big and strong?

Emmitt Williams is huge and gets called when a guy tries to lay it up on him and goes flying after running into his body, which is going straight vertical, and not a foul.

It just happened tonight and it is really stupid. Is it just me or have they been calling that on him all season?

The refs literally called a charge on a string bean center in Parker Braun cause LSU's big that is twice his size fell down right after this.

Shaq used to get called a foul for catching a pass. Why I quit watching the stupid sport.

How bad was the foul they called on him late in the second half. Didn’t even touch the guy. Literally.

Yeah the foul they called on EW towards the end at the rim was just about as bad as you will ever see at any level.

That was so bad. The ref didn’t even have position to make the call. All he saw was EW’s back and just assume EW fouled.

reffing basketball is a VERY hard job, and I do understand that. Bad calls happen, but it's just what happens when 10 big, fast athletes are moving around quickly in a very confined space.

But a couple things really bother me.

1. When refs "anticipate" contact and blow the whistle whether there's contact or not.
2. When refs bail out a ball-handler or shooter who's out of control or very late in the shot clock with a touch foul. The refs shouldn't reward bad offensive play with an iffy call.
3. Refs call too many charges. Only call a charge if it's blatant and obvious. Everything else should be a no-call.

Well said. You absolutely nailed this list. I agree completely.

1. The anticipatory foul calls happen all the time. It’s just lazy officiating.
2. The travel into a foul call is the most frustrating of all to me.
3. Absolutely. Just because someone hits the floor, doesn’t mean a foul was committed.

Anyone posting here under the age of about 32ish would have just HATED watching CBB when Shaq played.

It was a travesty. Seriously.

All one needs to watch was his last SECT game against UT to understand why. Then the subsequent press conference where Dale Brown just tells him to go pro ASAP.

The SEC is and always will be a JOKE when it comes to officiating in every sport.

Days is the one who frequently plays only 15-24 mpg because of foul trouble. He’s our best rebounder and one of just 3 guys with enough bulk to defend the paint, and Wade prefers to use Watford as more of a traditional 3 or stretch 4.

I wish the game on every level would allow the bigs to play physical and stop with all the ticky tack foul calls. I miss the days of passing to a big on the low block and having him fight for position, back to the basket.

Physical strength is a legitimate athletic quality that shouldn’t be viewed through an egalitarian lens. That it’s “unfair” to the weaker guy is no reason to punish the stronger player for what 25 years ago would have been a clean play 95% of the time.

Speed, quickness, agility, ball handling, leaping ability, lateral quickness and shooting ability are all skills which are rewarded (as they should be). It’s asinine that the game has relegated strength as some sort of unfair advantage that must be neutralized via egalitarian officiating, IMHO.

TL;DR: I miss bully ball.
