Remember the sign: "Jerry's kids haven't won since Labor Day"

In 1982 were the Tigers wearing purples for the Miss. State and Tulane games? I can't figure out why they lost to those two lowly teams, when LSU had already beaten good teams like Alabama, Florida and Florida State.
At one point the NCAA made a rule that the home team had to wear dark jerseys, no exceptions, so LSU wore purple at all home games for a few years. Dinardo made a point of lobbying for the LSU white jersey exemption, which initally endeared him to the fans.

How many people in here would stand for a winless SEC campaign? Even Hallman managed an sec win when we went 2-9.

Brodhead was a great AD.

Stovall could Recruit with the best of them. When he left the Cupboard was running over. Arnsparger came in thinking he was going to have a Rebuilding Job but found out the team was loaded and all he had to do was coach.

I think Georgia and Hershel Walker may have something to say about that.

Yeah, I think he meant in different years. Won the SEC one year because he played in the Sugar Bowl, and in a different year, played in the Orange Bowl.

it was tied up with the dismissal of Dietzel as AD and the hiring of Broadhead who wanted his own hire as I recall.
Wrong.
Brodhead would have been fine with Stovall as HC, had he been able to win consistently. BB said Stovall was a "promoter's dream."
BB was hired specifically to fire Stovall. The BOS and the good ole boys who ran LSU athletics at the time wanted an "outsider" to do the firing. The plan was, BB would then be jettisoned, but his good performance as AD prevented that.
Of course, eventually he was fired in favor of Joe Dean and thus was ushered in the darkest period in LSU athletics in modern history.
I admit I don't like this big impersonal "corporate" feel to LSU athletics these days, but it's much better than when it was run out of the back of Phil's Oyster Bar in New Orleans.

Dalton Hillard's coming out game was not at Alabama that year, but at Florida. Remember, true freshmen didn't play nearly as much as they do now and when he tore the Gators a new one that year, it made national news.

Negative, only bowl in four years he went to was the Orange after the 1982 season.
He wasn't ready to be head coach. Went from being a position coach to head coach.
I liked him because his passion for LSU was real not manufactured. And he was a good recruiter, Uncle Bill benefitted greatly from the talent Stovall left him.
But he just wasn't ready.

1983 Orange Bowl LSU lost to Nebraska 21-20 I believe... Since it was played New Years Day, that was 1/1/83 and it was in the 1982 Football season.
I didn't have to look all this up, and maybe I have the score wrong, but I do remember us hurling oranges onto the field after beating Florida State.
(Sorry ... Didn't Google any of this, just memories. If I'm wrong, will apologize and edit. I'm getting old)

I was at LSU during the Stovall years. Awesome years followed by bad years. It was inconsistency that did him in! The 82 season was unreal!!!

Losing to Tulane twice in a row didn't help his cause.

I remember riding up Nicholson and people selling bags of oranges.

What i don't understand is how one man can almost win a Heisman, and his offspring can't even catch a football much less look athletic.

Stovall wearing a purple jersey. You don't see many old pictures of the purple jerseys.
