I would assume that it has something to do with helping to keep costs down.

I bet its an antiquated rule from years ago that was designed to eliminate travel costs as a detriment to bringing the # of players you wanted to. Now that every school in the league is financially flush due to the TV contracts, it's really a non issue

Back in the day (80s) not all SEC teams made money. To keep Moo ST, KY , and Vandy around. Alabama use to pay Miss st to play there home game against Bama in Legion Field in the 70s.

Kinda...
The LSU's, Bama's, and A&M's likely have no problems eating the extra cost for the 40 players to travel but, really, why take that hit when you don't have to?
On the other hand, for schools whose athletic departments don't net out a lot of money, then saving those costs are huge.
Therefore, it's a way to keep all members on an even playing field.
