I know this may have been discussed ad nauseum here but LSU doesn't seem to have a natural rival. I understand LSU has taken some steps to revitalize our traditional rivalries but I'm not sure its working.

1. Ole Miss- Traditional but that really stopped being competitive like in 1975. I mean, when is the last time someone paid a premium for anything LSU v. Ole Miss related. We kind of just hate them like Aids, Cockroaches, and Cancer. You deal with them when you got em, otherwise you don't worry about it.

2. Arkansas- Its been competitive the past ten years but you can't really tell me everyone is screaming for that big faux gold looking Boot monstrosity we hand back and forth. Besides, the two fan bases are so self involved they really don't go out the way to hate on each other.

3. Alabama- We're kind of like their Ole Miss unfortunately. They don't like us but they kind of just deal with us as they need to. Our fanbase hates theirs but its more along the lines of the stepchild hating its abusive step father. He stuck your head in the mud for so long, you kind of hate him because you have to. You fight because you must.

4. MS State- They should just charge Non Conference admission to this game every year- it brings about the same excitement.

5. Florida- Ehh, the games are competitive and I think all Tiger fans enjoy punching Uncle Rico (Napoleon Dynamite ref) in the face every year- but come on, its more about the rankings. Usually the programs are ultra competitive so thats what brings the fire.

This makes me to believe LSUs modern rival is actually Auburn. I understand their traditional rival is Alabama/Georgia but I'm not sure there's a more natural hated rival in this modern era for Tiger fans. There are so many Gump/Ole Piss jokes a person can stand before it just is boring.

I'm thinking Texas A&M could be our new thing. But Arkansas could lay claim to them. I think a rivalry with Texas A&M would be a positive thing for LSU. Maybe not with a piece of retarded hardware involved but it does make sense.

It's Ole Miss

It's just irrelevant now b/c they're not good at playing the game of football.

Eh?

We had a stretch where we beat them at their place 7 times in a row.

And multiple times in the past 6 years or so, our game with them has been top 5 matchups.

So in your view, rivalries are dead...the BCS has killed them?

They're not really good at anything. Kind of shame. We should have funeral for Ole Miss Athletics.

It's whoever we're fighting for the West at that time. Some years it's Auburn others it's Bama. frick Arky, they'll never be considered a rival in my eyes. The old timers would probably say Ole Miss though. It will be real interesting to see how the A&M rivalry goes.

They're not dead. I just don't understand why people act like we need one. I want to beat anyone. I don't need a game to be called a rivalry to want to win.

Good descriptions.

I think a true rivalry requires reciprocity, a sense of intense desire on the part of both teams to whup the other and schadenfraude at the rivals failure. To have that the teams need to be pretty competitive over a long period of time and I think the fan bases need a lot of opportunity to interact.

Not all teams, even consistently good teams have that. LSU doesn't seem to.

They're dead then if we feel that way as a fan base. Its a shame not all the teams can be competitive every year (Looking at the state of Mississippi)

A shame, I look forward to seeing how the A&M game shakes out. I thought LSU played them pretty consistently in the late 80s, early 90s?

I am one of the older fans. If LSU plays A&M on thanksgiving weekend, they will become the rival. Once you newer fans get a glimpse of the Aggies and their 'traditions' and mannerisms, I assure you that it will get under your skin. They are Ole Miss times 3 with a touch of Bama without the athletic accomplishments thrown in.

From being in school in the 90s, A&M actually felt like a natural rival because it started the season in a huge way. Auburn was a bellwether game in many ways for the season and I always thought of that as a rivalry too.

LSU-FL and LSU-Bama since 2000 have been HUGE for BCS though so I'll go with them now

In all honesty it does not matter who our rival is as long as we win and stay #1

for many on this board our rival is JJ, but about 365 days ago it was Miles or Crowton
