Who remembers when LSU's facemasks were falling off

Think it was Leonard Fournette's last year as a Tiger. We had like 3 games where facemasks either popped off or just dangled after a hit. Never recall seeing another college or NFL team have multiple games in a regular season where this happened.

Was it a coincidence, extreme hard hitting smash mouth, or an equipment issue?

I remember playing Appalachian state one year (can’t remember what year) and watching from the north end zone as one of our players on kick coverage hit a kid so hard that his face mask literally flew off. I thought it was the coolest shite in the whole world.

It was the 2014 season. Fournette's popped off against Ole Miss in that 10-7 slobberknocker.

LF's facemask was ripped off by an Alabama player and they didn't even call a penalty.

We are lucky they didn't find a way to call one on LF for that.

Right around that time is when Riddell had these Quick Release Pins that held the facemask on. The idea was the facemask could be removed quicker and easier on an injured players rather than the old style that bolted on. Once the ball bearings got sweat and dirt in them they would not engage completely. I believe now there is an upgraded version called the 360 QR, I assume the new pins resolved the issue.

We know it was Ole Miss and now Bama from 2 previous posters, and I could have sworn there was a 3rd incident that same year. Maybe the 3rd game was just the OL vs. DL masks coming together and both having to remove their helmets, but seem to recall an actual mask off.

Thanks for the explanation!

Fournette's first year as a Tiger. Also Jennings had his facemask pop off against Bama and that one wasn't called a penalty.
