I would have been a trainer if I had tried hard enough, lol! Instead, I ended up equipment manager at NLU.

If I used steroids and HGH maybe I could have been a scout team body. Does that count?

Here are two of my personal beliefs:

1. Anybody good enough to play at LSU is among the best football players to ever play at their respective high schools.
2. There is such a thing as a good high school football player....no, outstanding high school player who is just not good enough for big time college football. Then again, I say the same thing for all levels of football.

My senior year LSU had filled their quota of short, no talent white boys

I was a really good snapper, just not really big. If I had beefed up more, I could've made it as a snapper/special teams guy. Got invited to play for a D3 school as a d-end. Didn't do it, rather I wanted to just be an LSU student

This is simply not true...unless by "play" you mean start. Even then it's not really true.
First off, guys walk on all the time (& dress for games) that were not at all GREAT in HS.
Also, I know of guys from my era (mid-90's) that actually played but were decent HS players.

My high school alma mater had four players sign with LSU from 1979 to 1981. When the All Century poll was conducted at my school in 2000 here is where those players ranked

Highest vote getter at LB and DB. Second highest vote getter at Center. All three started for four years for LSU. The fourth signee was in the Top Ten at DE at my alma mater and he played Special Teams and then dropped out of school after one year. There are certainly exceptions, but I stand by my general claim.

a lot of validity to this idea. big time colleges are keyed in on potential as much as current production. Especially with olineman.

I was a good HS player in spurts and if my heart was in it, could and did destroy anyone I played against. I did have to manage the spector of a past injury and troublesome expectations, but in the end I was a mixture of physical maturity mixed with mental potential.

All in all I made it to the big stage to see a hobbled tenure. It makes me sad today to think about what ifs and feel like I still owe every single teammate something. My only tonic is to look forward and be the best I can be at my job and to my family.

Being a big recruit may be a blessing, but it may also be a curse. I recieved my first letter in homeroom in 10th grade from UCLA.....the next week Notre Dame......it was down hill from there. Animosity, jealousy, expectations....its not all roses.

Yes, I meant start and I am not talking about special teams players either. Of course there are exceptions to any rule. It would be hard for me to believe that someone could walk on at LSU, make the team and contribute in games and be just an average high school player....but what do I know.

I realize I am making a general statement. It's just that when I go to LSU games and see those starters out on the field I sometimes think......those guys are among the best who ever played at their school.....and I still believe that a majority of those starters are.

Not sure what you mean by that, but if a guy has been signed to an LSU football scholarship, any era, chances are he's one of the best athletes around anywhere he's playing. Some of the guys that "got away" from LSU in the 70's-80's, are in the NFL/CFB Halls of Fame. It is easier to be a big fish in a little pond, however.
