re: Who fills in the middle of the Tiger baseball lineup?

I'd assume Breg would be leadoff
I actually said last year that Bregman would be an ideal leadoff hitter. He gets on base a lot, has good power to the gaps, and is a great base runner. The problem is, LSU doesn't have anyone else consistent enough to fill the 3-hole. No chance he moves out of that spot, unless someone just absolutely explodes on the scene.

He is not an ideal lead off hitter

Not saying I want him to hit lead off, but why?

He swings at the first pitch more than anyone on the team.

But his job in the 3-hole is not to work the count. I would assume, with his knowledge of the game, he would take a different approach as a leadoff hitter.

I did an in-depth rundown once of the typical hitter for each spot in the lineup. Leadoff is your best base runner. Contact hitter to put pressure on the infield on ground balls and on the outfield on plays at third and home. He can put pressure on a pitcher for the middle of the order giving them better pitches to hit and going deeper in counts. He doesn't need to hit doubles because he can get to second in a variety of other ways.

ell, I completely agree with your breakdown of a leadoff. But, which of those attributes don't apply to Bregman?
He's not the fastest, but a great base runner who has the ability to steal bases. Clearly a better base runner than Laird or Stevenson, even though both have more speed.
He's a contact hitter who rarely strikes out. I'll give you, he won't beat out a lot of infield singles, but he sprays the ball all over the field.
I think he handles the bat well enough and has knowledge of the game enough to work the count if need be.
Maybe "ideal" was the wrong word, but I still think he would be a solid lead off candidate for most teams.

He's the best overall hitter, therefore he goes in the 3 hole. The only other place in the lineup you may see him is 4 if they want to protect Ibarra in the 3. Bregs/Ibarra in the 3-4 is not one of the many questions we have to discuss.

That's not why Bregman doesn't bat leadoff

not much scares me more than the thought of our cleanup hitter being christian ibarra.

our lineup will be balanced top to bottom. We don't have any Matt Clarks to stick at the 4 just because they belong there.

He would be a solid hitter in any spot for any team.
But I think leadoff would be a waste somewhat and would not result in our most productive offense.

hopefully.

I said this yesterday. We'll have less power but we'll score more runs.

not really...if the fence is 10ft shorter last year, the results are likely different for lsu
Posted on 1/23/14 at 2:44 pm to redfieldk717
yes really. one small ball team wins in omaha and you think that makes it a trend? UCLA's pitching got hot at the right time and a lot of subpar hitters did as well. But it doesnt mean you want a lineup full of singles hitters.
