The Top and Leonardo's are good local food/drink spots east of campus. Salty Dog Saloon for cheap beer pitchers. Swamp's good too, but crowded.

I am coming in from Washington state with a buddy for this game. He is a diehard Florida fan but I’ll be deep in enemy territory screaming for LSU. We’ll probably hate each other by the end of the trip.

At any rate, since neither of us have ever been to Gainesville we are both looking for places to go and things to do before and after the game.

Go set up a TV at your local garbage dump bring some beer and you’ll probably have a better time than you would in that complete utter shithole they call Gainesville

Also if you’re wearing the opposing teams color expect to pay cover at bars that Florida fans walk right into

The Swamp right across the street from the stadium is always packed with fans of both teams. That whole street is known as the strip and has a lot of bars and restaurants. Lower your expectations and you won't be disappointed.
All of this.

Gainesville is better than College Station, imo. BUt Auburn is better than both of them.

Every negative comment you've read so far is true.

You can't walk around with a drink on the non-campus side of University Avenue. If on campus, it better be in a cup.

I've seen people stopped by the police on U. Avenue. Some guy was causing trouble in our section of the stadium. UoFloriduh police came up, tapped random LSU guy on the shoulder (who had an adult beverage in a cup inside the stadium) and took him out of the stadium. He was not the trouble maker. They look for people to eject.

I was separated from my group after the game, asked directions from a Florida fan and he deliberately gave me bad directions. His girlfriend told me he was lying and gave the correct ones.

frick Florida and their fans.

Edited to add:

P.S. The only place I've been to since Purple Porpoise closed is The Swamp. Good mix of fans of both teams. Okay bar food. It gets very crowded.

Yep. Went once in college after I had just turned 21 and the campus PD made our tailgate and in game experience a joke. Decided to go back a couple years later to give it a second try and it was just as bad, if not worse.

I’ve been to every stadium except for Vandy and I’d truly go back to Starkville in a heartbeat and completely happy to never go back to Gainesville ever again.

I'll vouch for Starkville. I like to pile on that town as much as anyone, but on game day it isn't bad. The campus is beautiful, the fans aren't ridiculously obnoxious, the stadium is MUCH nicer than it was 20 years ago and there are decent places to eat if you know where to find them. Hell, you can walk up to a tailgate there screaming "go to hell, Ole Miss" and they will take you in and feed you like you were their first born (I've seen this happen)

And go ahead and count me among the Gainesville haters. The fans and the stadium personnel are asshats. One of my favorite non-Tiger Stadium moments came in 2002 when we beat Florida's arse 36-7 in the Swamp. After we scored a TD in the middle of the 3rd quarter to blow the game open, their fans headed to the exits so fast that you would have thought the place was on fire.

When people would rather visit Starkville than your town, you must suck.

While Gainesville is certainly no Beverly Hills, I haven't seen too many celebrities moving into the local kenna neighborhoods.
