Those are my top three and us beating #1 and 55-3 OSU on their home field is a strangely underrated moment in our lore. But somewhere on the list of top pitching performances is Doug Thompson grinding out a win in the CWS championship game his junior year. Not the “dominant” performance we’re listing but certainly he won us that game.

Is it top 10?

Maybe because of the 9 Ks in a row with our backs against the wall.

That said, it’s the 9 Ks that will make it memorable and stand up. As good as this was though, most of our bigger top postseason pitching performances came in Omaha, and you can’t really compare the two.

Let’s hope Evans gives us a repeat performance for the ages there in two weeks.

Remember the OM game in the SEC Championship in 2009? What was that guy's name that pitched so great? Manny Ott?

He had been a reliever, a great one at the time down the stretch, and came in the game and pitched for like 7 or 8 innings, great pitching. That would be my guess.

We lost this game but Fontenots outing in the supers against FSU was a pretty gutsy outing too..

Same with Hellmers last year too.

they sure did.

Doesn't take away from the fact that they were one of the worst baseball teams to ever make a Regional, and simply got hot.

They weren't. But keep being hyperbolic.

Floyd pitched a great game but let’s not forget he gave up 3 runs in 8 innings. LSU has had many times in postseason history where LSU pitchers threw as long of longer and allowed less runs.

1993 Laxton in CWS Championship game vs Wichita State went 9 shutout with 16 K’s.

2009 Anthony Ranaudo in the regional pitched al 10 inning complete game to beat Baylor 3-2.

2013 Aaron Nolan 9 shutout innings in a Super Regional to beat Oklahoma and a top 10 MLB draft pick 1-0.

2017 Caleb Gilbert in CWS against Oregon State going 7 1/3 and allowing one run.

2023 Paul Skenes 8 scoreless against Wake Forest and the top 10 MLB pick matching him inning for inning.

We are all creatures of the moment, but I would even argue Helmers' performance last year was better given the totality of the circumstances:

Lightly used senior giving you 5.2 scoreless innings (the longest outing of his career), on the road, against the #4 national seed, in an elimination game. He did the majority of the work to get LSU to the 8th inning with the lead. If the end result is different, that performance is celebrated as one of the most unexpectedly great performances in LSU postseason history.

IMO, that's more impressive than a guy (Evans) who has been one of LSU's top pitchers all year, shutting down the #4 seed, at home, who, themselves, were completely out of pitching.

Agree. It’s a shame we didn’t finish off that win so that we would always talk about Hellmers.

we have 7 Nattys so you have to assume the bulk of the top ten happens in those championship runs

We’ve had 8 MOP in the CWS too.

So probably not top 10

but this is the kind of thing that happens in the post season, teams get desperate for out and then the hot hand comes in.

Disagree but even if you go with that logic it still doesn’t take away from them getting hot and being a tough out.

Remember ole Miss being one of the last teams in a couple years ago? Fresno state years ago?? If you’re playing good ball you’re playing good ball. The rest of the subjective shite is meaningless really.

LSU won and I think is better off for having been tested.

It was definitely a Ty Floyd moment. We needed a pitcher to step up and he did. Not knowledgeable enough history wise to say where it's exactly ranked but considering the issues with pitching and the gravity of the moment should be top 5.

For a freshman pitcher in playoffs, reminds me of Laxton

Laxton 1 Evans 2

Haven’t seen it mentioned and sadly probably bc it’s been a long time ago but Patrick Coogan pitched like 9 innings or relief against Long Beach in an elimination game that went like 15 innings in the ‘97 regional.

1996’CWS champ game will be considered the greatest game in LSU history because of the ending and the result.

But that WF game, if you look at the totality of the game and all the plays and performances in it, is the greatest game LSU has ever played in, and maybe the greatest game in college baseball history.
