He didn’t really throw the ball down field so that stat is skewed. I still love him, but as a passer he made clutch throws not difficult ones.

Naw. I think it’s hard to rank across different eras as the game has evolved so much. I guess his era could be extended until spread offenses became the norm in the SEC.

Regardless of where he ranks among all-time LSU QBs, he will FOREVER be known for leading LSU to that win over Spurrier and the Gators.

That was a David and Goliath moment for the ages.

Tyler was the man! Very underappreciated.

Rohan was the best out of this bunch. But Herb would be next in line.

Herb was better than Jamie Howard and Nall from the DiNardo Era

I loved the kid but he was very limited in size and throwing ability. He played on much better and different teams than Howard.

Herb was not a better QB than Jamie Howard. [quote]The bigger questions is do you take Herb over
Hatch (yes)
Jordan Jefferson (yes)
Jarrett Lee (yes)
Anthony Jennings (yes)
Brandon Harris (maybe)

By this definition, you have Brandon Harris over all of this listed above him? Interesting.

Why?

But I hit it so, I will say somewhere in the middle because he had some great wins, esp. Florida.

Harris was in no way on par with Herb.
Rantards blamed Cam and Les, but he was even worse at UNC.

Herb was as a decent quarterback. I liked him. Not the most arm talent but he was smart with the ball and was a nice run threat. He made the most of what he had.

He was a gamer who left it all on the field and had very good leadership abilities. You never questioned this man’s effort or love for his school.

As you said, the question was "Where does Herb Tyler rank among quarterbacks of his era?"

It doesn't say "LSU " quarterbacks.

Like you also said, reading is fundamental.

Herb didn't do anything particularly well from the QB position but win. Well, he was also pretty good throwing on the run, too.

He was the ultimate "jack of all trades" under center. Kid was a hard-nosed competitor and that went a long way at that time. Exactly what we needed.

I'm a big fan of Herb! Honestly not the most talented quarterback but played way above his level and was a great leader! Had some big wins!
Go Tigers!!

LSU would have won the 2012 NCG had Herb been the QB.
