He has never been an elite, or maybe even a good coach. He caught lightning in a bottle with a generational QB, an innovative OC that was able to effectively use his skills, and one of the better DC’s in the college game that he inherited from Miles. And for that one season, he managed to stay the heck out of the way and not meddle.

When he “wrote” his book. LSU always loses when it’s coaches become celebrities.
DiNardo with the restaurant and the Ford commercial-can’t coach anymore.
Saban wrote a book, went 9-4, then bombed in the NFL.
Miles wrote a book in his native tongue so no one could read it.

Somehow 2019 fell into his lap, like a homeless person finding the winning powerball ticket. It was like 1 and million odds.
This is coach o. LSU is an elite recruiter, yet he can’t recruit a complete roster, he has one PR disaster after another.
But hey he did somehow manage to be the head coach of the the greatest LSU team of all time.

About 24 hours after the National Championship game.

Not really who else was available?

The idea that things were plummeting outside of Burrow is ignorant, because it was the complete opposite at the time if people set the bias aside.
The 2018 D did look good I’ll grant you that but there were plenty of red flags, to ignore them is bias of a different sort, maybe a glass half full vs half empty situation. I think the 17 season and the bad ending to ND have been discussed enough.
The 17 class was epic but it was still mostly a Miles class (Yes O played a role as RC) but the 18 class left a lot to be desired. I was fine with cutting bait on Canada and moving on but he replaces him with E, who hadn’t been an OC in how many years? There were other staff that were less than inspiring.
That said there were some changes to the analysts iirc that were good and aside from getting Burrow there was Tracy. So by June of 18 things were looking better but I still think with out Burrow you are looking at 7-5 maybe MAYBE 8-4 at best. And what is 19, 9-3 10-2 if someone like Brennan developed?

No this is completely unfair. He recruited Burrow and got him to sign thats due to hard work not just stumbling into something

Wasn’t Bill Busch the key coach in getting Joe? He had the contact with the Burrows especially the dad.
In my analogy burrow is the powerball number

Ed O is going to be subject to the talent around him both in coaching assistants and players.
He doesn’t call plays so he has to live or die by the plays called
When we lost our offensive play calling after the 2019 season, he went adrift

assuming a troll, but the current "system" (if you can call it that) is a tire fire and should be eliminated immediately.

no coach wins without great players, you are just trying to discredit O. he was lucky Burrow was a)available to play right away and had 2 years of eligibility but he did the work to get Burrow to sign at LSU. It was a risk on JB part, he could have done the safe thing and sign with Cincinnati, we wouldn't have won the Heisman obviously or been the #1 pick but still could have been a 2nd or 3rd rounder and maybe a late first if he had played really well.
Give credit where it is due, O got Burrow, hired Brady, flipped Chase, held the 2017 class together, he built that team. That doesn't given him a life time pass and its becoming more and more obvious that he cannot come close to repeating that but he still did it and should always be appreciated for that
