KMA with "justify your fandom"

My Dad went to LSU after getting out of the NAVY after WWII and graduated there with a civil engineering degree in 1950. Because of him I became an LSU fan and was old enough to remember the 1958 TIGERS. I was a freshman at LSU in 1973 and lasted two years there majoring in "beer drinking". After 2 years at LSU I was kicked out and joined the NAVY and embarked on a 26 year career in that service. Every where I went during that time I promoted my pride for LSU. There were many duty stations where I was the "lone wolf" constantly telling BIG 10 and PAC 10 "knuckle-heads" how weak their conferences were. All I know now is that I may have not done well while I attended LSU, but I know my LSU History and so does everyone who comes in contact with me.

Well, my father went to Tulane, but was a huge Tiger fan. He and my uncle had season tickets when I was a kid and they would bring my cousins and I to a few games a year. My first game was against Kentucky in 1966. I had just made 9 years old.

well luckily one does not have to be born with a silver spoon in his mouth or have a degree to a fan of LSU.... Its "our" state university.... so all us good ole working country boys can be just as an intense of a fan as anyone else... My grand pa and dad always had the Tigers on the radio or tv on sat. night... growing up loving the Tigers, win or lose, was just something we learned to do because LSU is our state school..

My grandfather was an All-American golfer at LSU. LSU has been bred into me since I was little. My mom did grad school at LSU and I intend to do the same.

It's not required that I, or anyone else, "Justify" my fandom.

My parents grew up in Kentwood. My dad was in the Air Force when I was born, so we moved around a lot. However, when he was discharged he felt called to be a minister, so we moved to the Seminary in New Orleans. Fell in love with all things Louisiana there, and spent lot of time in Kentwood at my grandparents hunting and fishing. None of my family members there went to LSU, but they all loved the Tigers, and passed it down to me.

Edited thread title since a few humorless flamers misunderstood my light-hearted humor.
Many thanks to everybody who told their stories. It has been a blast following this thread. Makes me even prouder to have the background I have and share with so many people.

I was 3 and my sister 1 in 1958. Dad and Mom used to put us in bed with them on Saturday nights during the football season and we would listen to the LSU football game broadcast over the radio. Dad said he thought it was KSIG from Crowley that carried the games then (he and Mom have been gone a while now). We lived in Gueydan at the time. I wanted to be a Chinese Bandit when I grew up.
I also remember LSU beating Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl (1964?) and ending their long unbeaten streak.
LSU fan for life, during the good (now) and bad (Hallman).

I am a 3rd generation LSU alum with with a BS and MS degree. My Mom and Dad met at LSU on a blind date which happened to be a football game. The rest is history.

Grew up in Mo and N.J. In early 70's dad was transferred to So. La. to run a salt mine. I stayed in B.R. after he moved back to St. Louis. Never got excited about Tigers until I went to Law School when I was in my 30s and got talked into going to Tx A&M game and sit in student section. I was hooked immediately.

Atended my first football game in Tiger Stadium in 1957 at the age of 13. Following year, parents got season tickets and we attended every home game of the championship season as well as the opener against Bama at Ladd Memorial in Mobile. Attended all home games and entered LSU in 1962.
My wife and I both graduated from LSU and represented LSU at the 1966 Cotton Bowl, since she had just recently been selected as the "Darling of LSU". Her father was also a graduate. My two daughters attended and graduated from LSU during the '90's and were both LSU cheerleaders. My oldest daughter served as the LSU cheerleader coach for four years before she and her husband were transfered to N. Car. Have been an avid LSU fan and attended almost all games except when I was coaching in the '70's. Attended all home games in 1958 and both NC games in Superdome and many away games. Yes, I bleed purple and gold and hope to witness another NC this year. I have truly been blessed.

Your thread title sucked. Blame yourself, not the people who took offense to it. Congrats on your 4 degrees, I can't top that.

attended my first game in utero to listen and feel the vibrations in the amniotic fluid as Cannon returned the punt on Halloween 1959. Been a LSU fan ever since. This is absolutely true. I can't remember ever not loving LSU. I was born a fan and will die a fan. End of story. Second game I remember we were playing Ole MIss at LSU when I was about 4 or 5 and I watched the LSU fans leaning over and spitting on the Ole Miss players as they came through the tunnel. FAns must have been able to get a lot closer then. I knew I was in the best place in the world. Also remember a game in the mid to late 60's when we lost to Miami ( we were a much better program but didnt play well that particular night). I think I remember Nancy Sinatra like person singing " Don't Get Under the Subway Darling" or something like that.
This was all pre-Casanova.

It was always just kind-of there. I can't remember not being a fan. Mother, father, grandparents were always just fans. First game was 86 Texas a&m, first game remember watchin on tv was 87 Ohio St. I don't know any other way than purple and gold.

Was nine years old, and finished milking the cows on our dairy farm in plenty of time for the 1959 Old Miss game. Was sitting on the floor by my dad, listening on the radio when Billy Cannon took it to the end zone. The whole family erupted. Think I was beginning to play little league about that time; hooked from then on.
Screw the degrees; I opened my own business at 20 and never looked back. I'll bet it was fun living on campus though. Maybe next time.
