It was the final regular season game I believe of the 1981 season vs. Kentucky. The only conference game we lost that season.

He played at LSU from 84 to 88 so that date can't be accurate. 81 was a final 4 team.

My neighbor out here told me a story about Jose. Said did you know a guy named Jose Vargas? I said sure he played Bball at LSU. He told me that Jose and his gf at the time I guess were being mugged I believe it was in nola(if I remember correctly) said Jose beat the shite out of the two muggers and sent them to the hospital.

I knew he was in martial arts. Don't ask me if the story was true but my neighbor wasn't an LSU fan and he isn't the bullshite type.

you can find his stats on the internet in professional basketball in Latin America. He was a perennial all star scoring 20 and rebounding 10 till he was in his forties.

I really liked Vargas' game by the time he was a senior at LSU. And there is not much better unusual basketball lore than him talking the trainer out of the tiger cage. Think he had a tryout with NBA team.

Found an article:

In Vargas's sophomore season, the Tigers were tied with
Georgetown and, during a timeout, were preparing for one last shot.
The CBS cameras caught Brown spending less time diagramming a play
than telling Vargas, over and over, not to shoot. When play resumed,
No Way Jose promptly put up a 15-foot air ball, and LSU lost. Brown
so ripped into Vargas in the locker room afterward that the Tigers'
Anthony Wilson stepped forward to say, ''It's my fault, Coach! I
threw him the ball!''

I remember that . "Jose don't shoot. Jose don't shoot." And he shoots. Can't blame that one on Dale.

Of course I blame that on Dale. He failed to build the discipline into his player. Do you think Vargas would have disobeyed Bob Knight?

Jose and Oliver whatever you do do not shoot the ball. Georgetown '86. We lost but we outplayed them and turned season around.

My dad was district commander at the Highland rd polide station. They got a call that an LSU athlete got into a fight at Churches chicken. Dad went down there and found that Jose had kicked a guy through the plate glass window. Dale had to come get him. Never made the paper that i know of.

It did make the news and the paper and I remember it. Only thing you have wrong is it was the old Taco Bell which was about a block towards campus from that station. He was also a very funny guy, not hostile at all unless provoked.

I remember watching a news segment on the tiger cage incident on WBRZ. They interviewed Jose, and students were in the background chanting "Tiger Bait." I remember him being mad about that and saying, "This is not funny!"

That whole thing was such a WTF incident.
