re: What would it take for you to get on the "Keep CEO" bandwagon?

This. A homegrown winner is much more appealing than a transplant looking to move up in the game. Alot of folks see CEO as just a position coach and one that we can get any time we feel. He is much more than that down here. He is a once in a lifetime position coach that will do very well here at LSU if given the opportunity. Also, folks want to forget that he's coached under several big name coaching icons and that's got to say alot for him as a professional.
LSU Boosters are the ones who get ultimate say so, and they'll see that he's good for the LSU brand.

Win out and he's a lock. I can look past a loss in a close game at Texas A&M (road game on short week at the end of a brutal stretch of games). But we have to win the home games, especially Florida.
I have a feeling that Alleva will have made up his mind on Coach O after the Bama game though....can't wait too long to decide whether or not to go after Tom Herman aggressively because Texas is almost definitely going to be in the market for a coach and will be after Herman too. Texas plays Baylor at home next week...wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being Charlie Strong's last game, so LSU's hand will be forced if they want to seriously pursue Herman before Texas locks him up

you're wound a bit tight on this.
Not at all. I just have a differing opinion. At the end of the day I'll gladly support whoever LSU taps as the permanent replacement, and you'll never eVER hear me run back with an "I told you so" if it turns out to be Orgeron and it doesn't work out. the simple reason is I see nothing to gain from that act, and most importantly I want LSU to succeed more than I need to be right.
quote:
if this were a 1 or 2 game sample i would agree it would be ridiculous to give him the job but an 8 game stretch (a TOUGH 8 game stretch) is about a good a job interview as i could hope for. There are no guarantees with any coach. Herman has only been a coach for year and half, Jimbo is turning in some subpar performances as of late and got destroyed at home vs Louisville, PJ Fleck has done well but are we convinced he can handle expectations at a school like LSU? History is littered with failures with similar backgrounds to all coaches under consideration.
Right...it's nearly always a crap shoot. Despite what we want to think, not ANYONE can waltz in and win, and more importantly win at an even higher rate than Miles AND beat Saban on the regular. We are doing the unheard, in that we're trying to replace a coach that won a national title who himself had replaced a coach who won a national title. And the new guy? Has to win a national title and unseat arguably the greatest college football coach of all time. To call this a tall order downplays it. but, it highlights just how important it is to do everything you can to tap the right guy...because things could go off the rails VERY FAST in an SECW that is as loaded as it is.
Like I've said...none of this is a shot at Orgeron at all. But, given all the above, I'd feel more comfortable with the crap shoot if we went with a guy that had shown he'd done it, rather than one we hope can. Now...in your view the "done it" part is step in and win with someone else's program. Trust me...I want that too! It's just that I think it's actually an easier job...stepping in and being the inspirational leader and stop gap fix...than it is being the perennial face of the program having to deal with the daily ins and outs of managing it all. You don't seem to agree that it's all the different.
In the end, we'll see. In the meantime, let's win out and worry about this problem in December!

LSU would have to get turned down by several proven head coaches and make a short term deal with O so that we can get out from under the contract if necessary.

Les had consistent top 5 recruiting classes. It takes more than that.

I've been saying this all along. Interim HC is completely different than permanent HC. Apples and oranges.
But don't get me wrong, I love everything Coach O has done so far.

quote:I agree on the inspirational leader and players getting a bit amped up after a change to an interim coach - see Hal Hunter. I just think the 8 plus game stretch and who he is playing over that 8 plus game stretch will show us a lot. He has put in his own practice regimens, altered the offensive philosophy and left the defense alone. To the extent he can he is putting his mark on the program; not just shepherding it along under a 'whatever Miles did keep doing it' method. We'll see in game coaching decisions in a high pressure environment and many other things that will tell us if he could potentially have what it takes. I think he is putting himself out there as the face of the program right now, he is dealing with daily ins and outs right now.

I think winning out (total hypothetical but since you're in the never O camp let's just go with it) he will have shown me a lot, not a little. You seem to be of the opinion he will have only shown you a little, not a lot.
Again - if i had to hire someone today it would not be O. It would be Herman (and who knows what other candidates will show up) but I am not shutting the door on O. Let's see what he does first before writing him off is all i'm saying.

IN
O is getting his players to play motivated for him and is allowing the coordinators to do their jobs. He is clear on his vision, has had plenty of experience, and wants to please the admin and fans.
His past is just that, and failures come in a lifetime of climbing to the top. He knows how to win, and has experienced what not to do. The SEC stretch of toughness beginning this Saturday will tell the tale.
I'll get downvoted for this, but I'd like to see Coach O stay, and bring in Briles as OC. Let Ensminger coach qbs and be co-OC.
IMO, LSU would be scary good with that combo.

Nothing.
He has built and maintained one program and it was in our division and went 3-21 in the SEC. He got worse every year culminating in 0-8 SEC record and was far worse than both his predecessor and successor.
He did not build USC or LSU. He did not hire the coaches or pick most of the players. He simply brought his contagious Coach O energy and let the system already in place drive itself. Those are NOT his programs. He has had ONE program that was under his control.
Yes, he said he learned from his Ole Miss experience. Is LSU the type of program that should be the guinea pig to find out? Do we really want another “nice guy who can recruit but isn’t very smart” kind of coach? Isn’t that what we’ve been fricking sick of for years?
Ask yourself this: If Coach O was the same guy, but from New Jersey and had the resume he has, would you still want him to be the guy we fired Les Miles for?

You want LSU to bring in a sleeze ball OC that has never left the state of Texas that was recently fired for covering up systemic rape culture in his football program?
Yes, you shall be downvoted. And should probably have posting privileges removed.

absolutely correct.
Do people really want to hire a guy that went 3-21 in conference in his only stint as a HC?? Really???
He's done well as the interim at USC and LSU (sl far) but that's not nearly the same as running your own program. It's still basically Les' team, and O is doing a great job keeping the team emotionally intact. But it's not his program, and USC wasn't either.
Look, I love Coach O and would love to keep him here in some capacity under the next head coach, but it's far too risky to hire him as permanent HC. We need to open the checkbook and go get a proven commodity. Much lower risk there.

Hard to argue with that. I think it (CEO) will happen if Herman is not available.

What is the risk?
If he's given a 4-5 year contract for modest $$ and is unsuccessful after 2 years.............move on.

Win every home game. Win at least one remaining road game. Compete like hell in the other.
I'm not sold we can get one of the few coaches people want. So why take a risk on someone else.

Idk maybe because we were predicted to do it by many from the beginning of the season? Last I checked we still have the same players.
