Google Saban's 2008 Alabama football playbook. You can even download a PDF.

To add to this: they switch between 1-gap and 2-gap DL assignments and they run both press man and 'pattern match' cover-3 zone.

It's a complex, versatile defensive scheme. The X's and O's are excellent. Add the exceptional talent Alabama has and you've got a really difficult unit to beat.

They're multiple but their base is a 3-4.

My opinion is that LSU’s defense is better than bama’s

That being said our offense not scoring was piss poor coaching, our O goes against our D in practice. There is a talent gap, but not that much of a gap. The offensive game plan, was scared and not to get blown out, guess what it happened anyway

If O keeps SE next yr expect the same results against bama!!!

Sorta.

More a base 3-4 two gap but multiple at times. That means, the defense will adjust at times, switching to a 3-4 one gap attacking, morphing into a 4-3 look and concept.

I bet even 1/2 the line will play like a 4-3 while the other half plays like a 3-4. Saban has been at Bama long enough to install that type of philosophy PLUS he has the continuity of players to pull it off.

'pattern match' cover-3 zone.

It looks more like a cover 2 at times when the corners will give a cover 3 or man look and then sit on a more shallow out breaking route. I'm not familiar with the term "pattern match" but that may give the corners more flexibility than the deep 1/3 in a cover 3.

Interested in what "pattern match" means, could you clarify? I'm assuming it means if there is no one running deep from their side of the field it gives them the flexibility to sit on the more shallow routes? If so, it would seem that a route combo of a deep corner or go route by the split end combined with a 10-12 yard out route from the slot would be tough to cover if the QB has any time.

Everybody has a right to an opinion, but most people would not agree that a defense that gave up 281 yds rushing vs 12, and is statistically #40 vs #11, is a better defense. Every team has it’s O go against it’s D in practice, which is why it is important to have balance, it helps the whole team.

I'm no Football guru but Saban's defenses(Once he has his players) is very impressive.

I've seen this scenario play out so many times at LSU and now at BAMA I just laugh:

Ex. 3rd and 7

Defense lines up
Offense gets to line and QB audibles to correct play.
Ball snapped QB hits his read 4 yards down field
Defense has 2 defenders with bracket coverage on that receiver. Stopped 2 yards short of first down.

Saban dictates to the offense what check to make. It's crazy..
