What is tailgating protocol, really?

Good morning, y'all. I will be traveling from Houston to Baton Rouge and hoping to get the full LSU experience, despite the early kickoff. I have heard a bunch of things from friends that are LSU alumni, but I thought I'd bring it to the forum.
Am I really going to be invited into a tailgate as a visiting fan? Are LSU fans receptive to that sort of thing if I strike up a conversation? I am generally pretty agreeable as a human being and I do have a realistic expectation for this game (we win by 35, you guys shut down your football program in response). Is there a specific tailgate that you would recommend?
I've also heard that watching the band come down the hill is worth the time. Anything else you'd recommend?

Most fans will be very welcoming and invite you in to enjoy food and drinks.

Don't try to go to the toilet during half time.

yes, but don't walk up and act like you're invited.
you'll have to be prepared to take some good natured ribbing, and don't even bring up last year, unless you're willing to admit it was a fumble.

Make sure you don't take yourself and your team too seriously and 75% (conservative number) of tailgates will give you more food and drink than you can handle.
Basically, just be good people and you'll have a blast.

We didn't play Utah State last year...

Sorry to tell you, but this will be absolutely impossible. You will get 20% of the experience max. That's just the way it will be playing Utah St at 11.

Like any college stay away from Frat Row and you will be fine.
Someone will scream Tigerbait at you and then offer you a beer.

I'm assuming Utah state aggie, not A&M aggie

Emphatically yes. Now, you’ll get tiger baited and there will be good natured ribbing, but a vast majority of tailgates will welcome you to party with them as long as you don’t act like an a-hole.
BYOB though. Not that you won’t be offered, but that’s the host’s choice. No one likes a moocher.
We’ll be behind the union in front of life sciences. Come play LCR and eat.
Now, fair warning, you aren’t gonna get the full experience since it’s an OOC cupcake game at 11, but you’ll still have fun if you get there early enough.

Depends on if you're a Utah State aggie or a Texas Aggie.

I am a Utah State Aggie living in Texas. I've got no love for the College Station Aggies.

Welcome to Tiger Stadium. There are hundreds of thousands of LSU fans in Houston as you probably already know. Over 10K people moved to TX last year alone from Louisiana.

Oh, it's noticeable. I would say LSU has the third largest fanbase in Houston right after Texas and TAMU. I can't think of any other team that has a stronger presence.
For reference, there are about 1,000-1,200 USU alumni in the Greater Houston metroplex. So yeah, a little smaller....

Since the kickoff is at 11:00 a.m., if you want to get a taste of the LSU experience, there is no such thing as getting there "too early" this Saturday. The University may have some of the roads cordoned off, so you may want to consider parking at the end of Sorority Row near the Student Rec Center (unless you already have parking plans). You can always tailgate/tour AFTER the game as well :)
The Parade Grounds (in front of the Student Union), the Indian Mounds/Prescott Hall area, and along Dalrymple Drive closer to campus, and near Parker Ag Center, South Stadium, would be good areas to approach/greet tailgaters. Ignore the few a-holes.
At about 9:30-10:00 a.m., to see the Golden Band march down Victory Hill and hear the spine-tingling "Hold That Tiger", position yourself closer to the Maravich Assembly Center area. Some people claim spots up front on the barriers.
Oh, and IGNORE the ones who somehow think you are Texas A&M fans.
There are bathrooms in the Union, the Maravich Assembly Center, and on Nicholson Drive near the Stadium, as well as lots of Port-o-lets.
Mike's Habitat and Gift Shop is in that area also. Mike's Habitat is a good meeting place. I think there are bathrooms behind the Gift Shop there also.
The Tiger Athletic Foundation typically has a pregame presentation in the Assembly Center, but they may not for this game....
Just saw this:
Fri., 5 p.m. Parking Lots Open for Tailgating
Sat., 7:30 a.m. Live Band at Cou-Yon's Tiger One Village Open
7:30 a.m. Nicholson Gateway Fan Zone Open
8 a.m. LSU Athletics Ticket Office Open
9 a.m. LSU Pregame Broadcast On-Air
9 a.m. All Tiger Stadium Gates Open
9:40 a.m. Football Team Arrives at Victory Hill
10:10 a.m. Golden Band Pregame Performance
11 a.m. Kickoff: LSU vs. Utah St.

Nobody has ever accused LSU fans of being the smartest fan base in college football.

Exactly. The Golden Rule of "Don't be an a-hole" certainly applies here. I would safely say 9 out of 10 tailgates would welcome you and your people with open arms. Some people don't like to be bothered by people they don't know, which is just fine...but for the most part at tailgates, there is no such thing as a "stranger".
Our state sucks, so we don't have a lot to be proud of in general, but one thing we pretty much hang out hat on as source of pride is our ability to make visitors feel welcome. We want people from afar to experience the warmth and generosity of our people so they can go back home and say "Those Louisiana folks know how to do a football gameday"
