I don’t know if it was the scheme or what, but they were not good on Saturday. Queen had some nice plays in the red zone, but they got exposed a lot. So did Stevens and Vincent in the pass game.
Florida’s was considered a top 5 defense, and our offense lit them up all game long. To that you say, “Our offense was great.” Does it occur to you that if the shoe was on the other foot you’d say our defense stinks?
Our defense was not exposed Saturday. They played a great team, took a few shots, and gave a few back. They did enough to win against a consensus top 10 team.

Not necessarily, New England used that very strategy to stop the Rams greatest show on turf and there have been a lot of games since where bellicheck will do this vs great QBs. You guys are too quick to look for any reason to blame Aranda without looking at the problems we’re having on the field with players making huge mistakes.

Florida scored 24 on Auburn who most people here say is the best defense in the country. We only gave up 4 more points to the same offense with more experience together and a better understanding of how to use their 2 QBs. People who don’t respect Florida’s offense are fools.

You have to pick your poison against that offense of Alabama, you can play inside-out and take away the slants, digs but you open yourself up to the fade, go routes and back shoulder throws. That's why playing some zone effectively would be the way to slowing them down a bit.

It’s about Alabama. The deep digs and crossing routes they run can be shut down by zone——if correctly executed. Also takes away the deep balls. Clemson and Georgia both used it well to limit their offense. He wants it operational to mix in 50/50 against them. This is a guess, but you saw a decent example Saturday. Lots of zone in the first half, second half more of a mix with man being used when we brought 5-6 guys.
One of the best comments ever

I agree that some players not getting it and not executing are a big part of the problem. The ILBs and safeties have all struggled in coverage and with busted assignments. So, if the defense can‘t execute a 7 or 8 man zone effectively, can’t disguise well and can’t blitz out of zone by mid-season, then is it not the staff’s job to make a call and a adjust to what they can execute?
Also, comparing to an NFL defense is NOT apples to apples. They get far more practice time, have stable lineups, and the players are older and more mature. They are also the best that college had to offer.
Asking a college secondary to do this with much less practice time is a tall order. Some schools do it, but I can’t name a time when we have been really successful on D running a lot of zone.

Get to the half without dialing up pressure and the bring the pressure in the 2nd half ... this strategy doesn’t give the opposition a chance to make halftime adjustments.
In my limited analytical prowess - this is the only strategy that I can understand.
