We had a brief discussion about CPM's mindset in another thread.

In previous years there is little doubt CPM would keep Hughes at SS and insert Smith at third. Defense was generally his priority.

This year with the offense down it's more than likely Smith goes to SS and Slaughter stays at third.

Anyone with the ability to take the ball out of the park is going to get at bats going forward.

Hughes remains a great 9th inning defensive replacement by moving Smith to third.

Broussard may be the odd man out but we'll have to see who performs going forward.

Edit to add: Wasn't knocking Broussard. He was killing it before the injury. Thinking about a lineup with power as the determining factor.

I know Smith and Bryce are getting close to being ready but what's the projection on Broussard ?

IMO:

(1) Beau Jordan- LF
(2) Watson- CF
(3) Duplantis- RF
(4) Bain- 1B
(5) Smith- SS
(6) Broussard- 2b
(7) Feduccia- C
(8) Cabrera- DH
(9) Slaughter- 3B

If Smith can get into a rhythm then you try him again in the leadoff spot.

If we get to that lineup which in reality may be the best lineup moving forward I'd like to see Feduccia slide back to the 8 hole much like Papierski did a year ago and have a speed guy at 9 much like they did with Watson a year ago. The only problem is the speedsters are all the best contact hitters and you want them at the top so it makes sense to have either Slaughter/Hughes there.

(1) Broussard- 2B
(2) Watson- CF
(3) Duplantis- RF
(4) Bain- 1B
(5) Smith- SS
(6) Cabrera- LF
(7) Beau Jordan- DH
(8) Feduccia- C
(9) Slaughter- 3B

He's throwing the ball but he hasn't started swinging and gripping a bat yet. Guys like him heal quickly and I wouldn't be surprised if he's able to pinch hit around the Ole Miss series. The majority of the next week or so is how quickly he's able to deal with any pain or discomfort as he nears 100%.

I might get blasted for this but why not put Jordan catching and sit Feduccia. I mean if we aren't throwing anyone out stealing and allowing past balls, what's the point of having him there. Get another useful bat in the lineup

Broussard played with a bad hand for a couple of week's before getting hit. Tough as nails kid and I expect him back sooner than projected.

A lot of these projections have Cabrera in left and Beau at DH, but if that was coaches' preferences, it would have been done for last few weeks. I hear in spite of speed, coaches like Beau's first step and angle to balls. Cabrera tends to sometimes take bad angles or make poor decisions, like diving for a ball in front of him that's not catchable.

I think you're more likely to see Cabrera at DH.

Bryce couldn't play this entire weekend because of a bad knee and you want to have him squatting behind the plate for an entire game?

Yeah........no.

If you DH for a position player in college you lose the DH for the rest of the game.

ETA: That means the pitcher position has to bat for himself for the rest of the game.

quote:

In college baseball, NCAA rules state that the designated hitter must hit for the pitcher, but in many instances the pitcher is also a good hitter, and the coach may elect to let the pitcher bat in the lineup. If the pitcher opts to bat for himself, he is treated as two separate positions – a pitcher and a designated hitter (abbreviated P/DH on the lineup card) – and may be substituted for as such (i.e. if he is removed as the pitcher, he may remain as the designated hitter and vice versa). However, if a player who starts a game as a P/DH is relieved as the starting pitcher, he may not return to the mound even if he remains in the game as the DH, and he may not play any other defensive position after being relieved as the pitcher unless he immediately moves to another defensive position, in which case the new pitcher must assume the spot in the batting order of the fielder the P/DH substituted for, and the DH is lost for the remainder of the game.

Because as bad as Feduccia has been at times Jordan is no where near an average catcher in the SEC defensively.

Beau Jordan was awesome as lead off batter this weekend.

Beau - LF
Watson - Cf
Duplantis - RF
Bain - 1st
Smith - Ss
Slaughter 3B
Cabrera - DH
Hunter - C
Broussard - 2nd

Bryce would be next up at 1st or DH
Coomes after that for those two spots
Reid would be backup to slaughter or broussard if needed
Hal Hughes could replace anyone needed for defense late.

I'm thinking:
LF: Cabrera
CF: Watson
RF: Dups
3B: Slaughter
SS: Smith
2B: Broussard
1B: Bryce Jordan
C: Feduccia
DH: Bain/Beau Jordan

Beau and bain need to be in the lineup. Bryce is the odd man out in my opinion

Adam4848,

What is the latest on Jordan? I know he got injured last week at A&M and haven't followed up on the news. Is he due to come back or is he out for the season?

Thanks

honestly, i don't see why bain can't play 3rd if needed. i think he could succeed at that more than 2nd, ss or outfield.

if hughes could hit .300, this team goes from solid to contender. that would be a tough lineup, strong defense and lots of solid pitching options. very few weaknesses.

He'll be fine for South Carolina, it was only a bone bruise.

Mo way Hughes is a .200 hitter we need the best offensive lineup we can get. When healthy Smith is above average D and a solid .320 hitter.
