I don't know...

I'm sure the coaches have told JJ not to take hits like the Vandy game.

But, I also think Crowton was trying to set something up w/ that play.

Y'all remember the '07 BCS game where Flynn would take a snap roll to the right and ran every play tentatively? Then late in the game, the same thing was called and Flynn passed it to Dixon for a TD.

I think they were trying to get something out of that, but...

I guess we'll find out the next few games.

i don't mind it once or twice, as a surprise but thats about it. You don't run the option with your slowest back. I also don't like that they rarely ever run it correctly. You don't want to pitch the ball backwards like they often do. YOu want to have your RB and QB squared up to the LOS when the choice is made if to pitch or not.

Seems we used it well to set up the rest of the offense

That is kind of what the announcers were saying. Crowton had the UG defense spread out all over the field. This option, however sloppy it might have been, kept the defense guessing about what we were going to run.

you have to learn how to run the option first . dont get so deep run the ball down the line and make the defense commit to the qb then pitch if they dont keep the ball. JJ is way to deep in the backfied and that why there is no space with him and the back.

jj did not run the option very much in high school. you can tell he is not comfortable with it....he does not attack the outman and takes a deep angle.

in order to be effective you have to run at the outman and make him decide. you should be progressing up the field even before the pitch. if he bites, you pitch and give your back some room to work with down the sideline. shep should be running the option.

I really like the option, but JJ isn't the best person to run it. And I would like to see keiland as opposed to charles.

why we didn't run it much in the 2nd half is beyond me.

The play should be eliminated from the play book. LSU has two NFL draft picks at RB. The 2nd half of yesterday's game proves LSU's offense is better suited for the I. Throw in the wildcat with Shepperd and it's on.

IF JJ would run the option right it would work. You can't run the option wide or should I say deep in the backfield and expect it to gain you many yards if he would have faked the pitch to scott he could have made that first down .

I like it and we basically had one negative yardage play using the option and it was due to Jefferson's angle of attack.

It stretches the field and makes the D not concentrate on the middle of the field.

I think it should be Shep and KW/ Scott.
I prefer KW. He seems to have a skill set that fits the option better than Scott. I like Chuck in a more North/South game. Maybe they could let Shep run the triple option from the I with Scott at FB and Williams at TB. Crowton could set up some very effective playaction throws for Shep off of it. I think he did it with RP a couple times in 2007.

On another note, I was happy to see Shep get to run some zone read (an option that JJ is actually decent with), he was good on his ballhandling.

Yep, that zone read with Shep and Trindon is deadly. Shep fooled me good one time. He stuck the ball really deep in TH's gut, and Trindon sold the fake very well.

JJ is pretty good with a simple zone read as opposed to the traditional option. He has decent mobility, but it isn't like he is a RB in QB's body. He's not Eric Crouch; he's a throwing QB first and foremost. I like how we ran a lead play off of it (I think Scott led JJ through the line.) Having the ability to have both the RB or Shep run inside or outside will give defenses fits. Maybe Calhoun, Ford, or Seastrunk *fingers crossed*, can fill the RB role in it next year.

It's great for opening us the inside running game. You can't put a bunch of guys in the box and defend the option. If kees the defense spread out.

In addition, I bet if you computed the average yards per carry on the option play, it would beat the average yards on straigh hand offs.

So what's there not to like.

I think you are focusing on the few that don't work rather than the many that gain 4 or 5 yards.

It also spreads the defense out. They can't bunch up in the box, if the threat of the option is there.

It has a lot of impact on top of the yards gained.
It also doesn't look explosive, because JJ is very conservative with it. There have been no major mistakes in the option game, which is JJ's general MO.

What bothers me on the option is, that it looks like it is in slow motion. By the time the pitch is made the defense has got it played. Never seems to be at full speed.
