re: What do LSU fans generally think of Mark Richt as a coach?

Ok, what I said was I don't understand why you are using this as an argument. Yes, they are comparable season RESULTS. However, the games that made up those results are different. LSU, through that comparable result, was able to advance to a conference championship game, where it won, and then won in the biggest game in college football.
The reason I point it out is to show how much that is beyond the control of coaches is involved with MNCs (as well as showing that playing in the SECW is a big help over playing in the SECE... as the LSU/UGA records against both divisions this decade show... both much better against the SECW).
People like to use it as the ultimate determinant of a coach's abilities... but using something with that much luck involved is a little silly. Would Miles be any less of a great coach had he simply won the SECC (with a loaded team) and not gotten a huge upset by Pitt?

Saban - has already won a national title

and even Phat Phil - has already won a national title.
Richt has not, except maybe one for whining.

10 years ago. he's let his program slip and has routinely made bad coaching hires
richt > fulmer

UTenn was a top 25 team last year
they weren't when UGA played them, and probably wouldn't have been if UGA would have beat them. They lost 4 games last year

The point was simply that 10-2 (6-2) seasons are pretty comparable as far as grading coaches goes (especially when one considers Richt's team was not picked to do much at all last year).
Yet the national media picked his team #1 this year, they won 3 games and dropped to #3, then got blown out AT HOME by an otherwise unproven Bama team. Pre-season expectations mean shite.
Regardless, who on this thread is saying he is not a good coach? Everyone says he is -- he just hasn't translated his success to a national stage. Through no fault of his own, he goes 11-1 in 2002 and can't crack the title game. Then in 2005, he wins the SEC Championship, but at 10-2 there is no way to crack the top 2 of USC/Texas. That sucks. In 2003, he has to deal with LSU twice. That sucks. However, his team couldn't beat LSU in two opportunities in 2003. His team lost to WVU in 2005 in a BCS game. His team got blown out by UTenn and lost to SC in 2007, when winning either one of those games would have meant a national title game berth most likely (instead of a glorified scrimmage against Hawaii).
They just haven't taken the opportunities put in front of them.

Fulmer's done.

They didn't score a touchdown against south carolina last year playing at Home. Isn't he suppose to be an offensive coach

They aren't everything... but they can be a good indicator as to what a team has. 2005 UGA was picked where it was for good reason: it had less than several other SEC teams. An excellent coaching job made up the rest.

Again, what has he done as far as this goes that couldn't be said about every other coach? He has a 12-1 season... just as Meyer/Saban had. Just total luck outside of the control of any of them separates the seasons from there.
So this "national stage" stuff, as it concerns a comparison of Richt and coaches you put above him, is kind of silly.

And LSU lost to Kentucky and Arkansas...
We can all do that all day long. You're better than this.

Yes, we can.
LSU BEAT TENNESSEE AND SOUTH CAROLINA.
UGA DIDN'T.
This is irrelevant to the issue. Richt gets it done when the stakes aren't as high, bottom line.

You mean like losing to Arkansas at home with the MNC on the line?
Good work by Miles beating West Virginia after that I guess. Richt wouldn't have been able to do that.

SFP, you know division losses are worse than non-division losses.
Regardless, we are all admitting that luck played into LSU's entrance into the national title game. However, there was no luck getting into the SEC title game. SEC clinched the west before losing to Arkansas. UGA lost 2 games to East opponents and lost any chance of a SEC title game appearance. That's the difference.
Either way, Richt and Miles are in the top 4-5 of SEC coaches, a group that is very crowded at the top.
