I think the biggest problem he has is not really having any starting pitching that can give him 71/2 innings. This would overcome some of the defensive issues and minor in-game hitting slumps

Starting pitching isn't fixing the defensive lapses in the infield. Hilliard got to experience it first hand game 1 when he had 2 outs and then subsequent 2 errors behind him giving up 4 runs. Starting pitching would have to strike out every batter faced then whomever would be catching would start dropping 3rd strikes allowing guys to reach 1B. Some of these guys need to develop mental toughness in the field and apparently at the plate given declining run production in games 1 & 2.

I agree starting pitching being one of the major issues but having a better defense would have helped in getting them off the field quicker. There is no excuse for an LSU team to be last in any category.

Look at where we are at statistically pitching. The pitching is 100% not the issue. It doesn't look "normal," but we don't have the typical big arm starters to get you deep in games like we are used to seeing. That has not hurt this team though.

We could have the best pitchers in college baseball, and they are going to get touched up whenever they are having to get 4-5 outs per inning just to get out of it. I don't care who you are, SEC teams will burn you when given extra opportunities.

If everything else was the same, and we had just an average defense we would be discussing right now where we would fall between the 3 and 8 seed to end the season, instead of praying we can hold on to a host spot.

The expectations of this year’s team have been exceeded this season. We had 0 starting pitching coming into the season and our bullpen has carried us like no one expected them to. Pitching has been been a great surprise this season while the hitting is what we expected. Our lineup is one of the top in the SEC but when you put Cranford in for Berry it takes a huge hit. The defense has not been good but we are being mentioned as a top 16 seed this time of the year and that is impressive for Johnson’s 1st year.

Sometimes you have bad days in baseball. They’ll be fine. But, this is a good team, not great. Starting pitching is lacking and defense is below average. CJJ has done a great job considering team weaknesses.
