Not really, I don't like to eat a big plate of food while I am drinking.

The tents along the edge of the street can use grills. We grill out every game

Ice chests must be locked at all times on the campus and walking Onto campus or pulling a wagon with an unopened "suitcase" of beer will get you stopped and each can opened and poured out. So add a padlock to your ice chest and have fun. The Grove is rediculously crowded but there is more room around other areas of campus. Oh and you can "sneak" In about as many airplane mini bottles as you can stuff in your belt line. They are not strict on that.

really? they made us pour out cases of beer and several bottles of liquor (unopened) and arrested 2 of my friends (and yes, we were all over 23). had to spend a good portion of the night bailing them out of jail. the place is awful, will never return.

No way that happened with no other details. Just none.

Yeah, my gf's sister told me that, but I thought she was bullshitting. She said nobody will stop you if you're just pounding fricking bourbon, but if you're sipping a beer, you've gotta be stopped.

Put it in a cup.
I think they came down hard on the booze when an officer was killed while trying to arrest a drunk driver after a game day.

Alcohol OVER 5% is allowed Meaning you can openly drink bourbon, vodka etc etc, but beer is not actually allowed so that must be put into a cup
What if I'm drinking a real beer with over 5% abv?

The blue bloods at OM would probably stroke out if they saw you drinking malt liquor or MD 20/20.

Not quite what I'm talking about

They "don't allow" any beer. It is to discourage binge drinking, which is a pretty comical notion.

I live in Oxford and tailgated at most games last year (There paying for my grad school is why I'm here). I can assure you that Lafayette County is not a "dry" county in any respects. There are both liquor stores and beer sold in every gas station. There is no rule of based on percentage of alcohol when it comes to drinking in the grove. The hard rule is simple: No alcoholic containers can be visible to the eye, thus you have to drink out of a cup whether it's beer or liquor/wine. You also have to transport the alcohol to your tailgate area in a cooler. I have seen several visiting fans walking with a case of beer and cops pour every single one out. Likewise I have seen many liquor bottles be poured out as well. Another rule they have (which I think is stupid) is that every cooler must have a lock on it. Most people screw a latch onto the cooler and use a pad lock. I have seen cops go around and check tents for open coolers and pour out all the alcohol contained therein if they are open. Most tents I saw last year also had "open flames" as well as everyone was grilling something.
tl;dr:
Oxford is not a dry county
You must drink all alcohol from a cup in the grove and alcoholic containers cannot be visible.
You CAN have an open flame in certain areas.
All coolers must have a lock on them and be locked at all times.

5.Lafayette County is “dry” for beer and light wine (less than 5% alcohol by weight). Thus, distribution, possession, and consumption of beer and light wine is illegal in that portion of the University’s campus that lies outside of the City of Oxford

•Beer is technically not legal on the Ole Miss campus, but liquor is.
quote:
Since the outfield of Swayze Field is technically not on the Ole Miss campus, the aforementioned rule does not apply there - but only there, as one cannot expect to drink elsewhere in or around the stadium without reproach.
And to answer Cap Crunch from earlier, the way the law is written it appears all beer is illegal, and WINE uneder 4%

And this is supposed to be the best tailgate place? wtf

LNCHBOX- 100% true story. it was 1998(OT game)the night before the game we were at a party, my 2 friends walked out to the car to get a beer. A cop walked up to them, made them pour it all out, cuffed them and brought them to jail. when I walked in to bail them out, the officer that answered the door told me, "if you have been drinking, you will also be arrested". I told him I wasn't aware that it was illegal for a person over age 21 to drink alcohol. I had to call several friends to get cash from them to bail my 2 friends out of jail. we left immediately after the game. if you don't believe me, I don't care, but it is 100% true.

It sounds like it kind of sucks to be honest. Maybe growing up in Baton Rouge has given me some convoluted perspective on what tailgating actually is.
Posted on 8/11/15 at 2:13 pm to hillrosetiger
Ok so Lafayette is dry but Oxford is not. The entire campus (main campus) is in Oxford so I'm not real sure how that rule would apply any longer.

It is refreshing that you refer to it properly as an "Ice Chest". I can't stand all this "cooler" talk; makes you sound like a Grove regular. If you are from South Louisiana and use the term "Cooler"; you should be banned from this thread!
