If Rettig can beat out Jennings in spring we'll see. I believe Jennings is the best QB.

Rettig didn't play because the system he ran in high school was very much different than what LSU ran, while the one Jennings ran in high school was very similar. He slid right in with it. As for Rivers, he looked good in the spring game but is similarly as immobile as Mett, but not quite. I tend to think the staff likes the escapability of Jennings. As for Rettig, he is not a statue but not a runner. Has an arm just below that of Mett's and could be very good when the lights come on, if they ever do. In any case, it will be quite the battle for the starting position "if the coaches really treat it like an open position."

Better yet if cam is the genius QB guru we all seem to agree he is, let him decide.
If he likes Rettig and selects him to start, he'll be called a Racist for sure.

That said, I think the kid did okay for his first start in a big situation.

No, he really didn't. Thankfully, the D was looking pretty sharp

That said, I think he will be fine and ready to go for next season.

For better or worse, we could be looking at another alternating QB scenario next year. The staff went with Jennings this year because he brought escapability/athleticism to the table to compliment Mettenberger. The less experienced the QB, the more advantage the dual threat provides. So the choice of AJ over Rettig is not surprising, based on that alone.

It was surprising though that AJ didn't use running ability to better advantage vs Iowa. Was it simply a matter of coaching specific to this game? Maybe.

Jennings threw short balls very well yesterday. Whether d/t coverage or arm strength, he was ineffective finding receivers on intermediate routes. His long ball accuracy was surprisingly off. Maybe that had to do with conditions.

But the QB competition should be very interesting this spring. No time to mess around, opening up with Wisconsin.

Some very nice comments there NC-Tigah. bow:

Including the possibility that the coaches instructed him to avoid running to assure his availability for the whole game. Once we showed how we could run the ball, AND the D's effectiveness, why take chances.

And back to the OP, a lot can change with Rettig's development. He has the arm strength, height, and intelligence. Let's see what another off season of work and coaching can produce.

He still has that Michigan mentality. Option and run over and over again. I sometimes think he kneels and talks to Shembeckler.

The running ability, the pinpoint pass on the TD in the Ark game and confidence we saw in the last minute of the Arkansas game, was nowhere to be seen today. The QB position should be wide open next year, and hopefully the best QB which gives us the chance to move the offense and get us a victory wins out...

The kid had about 10 seconds to think about what was happening against Arkansas. He had a month of intensive game prep to think about it this time. He looked ok early. Not great, but made a couple of good decisions and throws. He went into a shell in the 2nd half, and that was it. Give him a little time, and have some faith in Cam. He did a pretty good job this year, and his track record speaks for itself.

The fact is that the QB competition will be hotly contested next year

I don't think it's necessarily important that they come out of the spring with a clear #1, but let's hope it is clear going into the season. There was going to be competition at the position this spring whether Jennings played great yesterday, or not.

What?! People are actually hating on Jennings for today?

- Iowa has a great defense
- He's true freshman in his first start
- Rain
- Game plan was definitely revolved around the running game and not putting it on Jennings

Don't believe MOST People are hating on Jennings. Why when someone says the QB position should be open they are hating on Jennings. He didn't play well. I think he will be better next year and should win the job, but it still should be an open competition.

I have no idea who will win job or next season, based on one reason.
I haven't seen any other guy play besides AJ.

I will say this, as a competitor you gotta think Rettig or Rivers believes they can do as good or better than Jenninngs did yesterday.

How about we change the focus for a moment from AJ and the other contender QBs to–Cam Cameron. I'm confident he'll be able coach our guys up to the point that at least one of them will emerge as a great QB. I think it unlikely CC will be here for more than another year or two, but I have to believe he'll have a very positive influence on the development of our QB's in whatever time he's at LSU.

that would have given him the confidence needed.

Seriously, Iowa and their D are no joke. The fact we ran it down their throats was unexpected.

The game plan against a top D and Arkansas are slightly different. You cant compare apples and oranges.

He suffered, and they obviously showed some coverages of our big 2 receivers that we did not expect, and he did not handle that well at all. Hate to break it to everyone, but we are going to see it out of a sophomore AJ as well. He will get better, or he wont. Rivers is adequate if needed. Rettig can then have his shot.

Look, it is a big mean world and AJ will have to improve, but not one of our QBs on roster would have done much better against Iowa yesterday. Mettenberger will be missed next year. Everyone will be up in arms by second half of Wiscy. It will be a miserable year to even check in on the rant.

Yes, he will have one of them where they are really good, by the time they are Jrs. Until then, holy shite balls this place will be nuts.

Nope, some things take actual experience to learn how to grapple with them. He did a good job, he was competent, he will improve

Yes, because one was so clearly better.

Both threw for about 30 TD and 20 Int in their career, both threw for 60%, both made idiot decisions, one ran for about 1000 yards.

How anyone can not see that they were both mediocre is beyond me.
