That's like saying Kiffin should start Longstreet over Leavitt since he's a Freshman and Leavitt's in year 4.
Did Longstreet produce at a similar level to Leavitt last year?

Neal wasn't great while here and probably never would've stuck around anyway
That's why continuing to bring him up is legitimately dumb. He was also a terrible clubhouse guy.

I wonder how this affects the NIL approach this offseason. It might lead to bigger checks for unproven talent vs putting resources towards transfers.
On a similar note, keeping up with HS hitters who choose going pro vs college is getting brutal. Most of these guys can’t even crack .200 the first year or two in minor league baseball now that they consolidated the leagues. The pitchers are adapting much better, but it’s getting to the point that drafting a HS bat is the riskiest play you can make. You obviously get outliers like Konnor Griffin, but it’s literally 1-2 per draft that are catching on quick.

Give it to CJ Weinstein and Anthony Murphy.
And get Todd Graves to throw a couple Cane's franchises at Jensen Hirschkorn.

We’re learning.. recruits not portal
Been seeing this posted every week since things went off the rail.
Almost all the top 10 teams this year have portal guys that are real difference-makers on their respective teams. We saw portal guys flourish here the last two years. Why is this year all of the sudden a bad strategy to bring them in? What's (who's) changed?

There's more than one way to skin a cat. We will continue to use both

That’s true, with experience two-fold in this last month of season- these 2 Patrick & Ruckert were recruited here and rightfully so. These guys were elite HS players and deserve to be here. Patrick was thrown into the fire via JB injury he WILL be a dude. I’m partial & bias because I know him very well and have watched him since grade school. He was the best player on the field (football & basketball) regardless of competition he played against. He’s different and will succeed at a high level at LSU. Book it.

These true freshmen are special..
Braun and Serna are great, as Curiel was last year and Milan and Larson the year before. That said, would you have turned down Eyanson, Hernandez and Dickinson last year? I should hope not.
Life is about balance. This is just one more area that requires it.

Neal
Bama had to move him from catcher, so he’s batting well but still not great in the field. And he was terrible at the plate and at catcher last year.

and there in lies the problem, real baseball players do not want to just "hang around" and wait to play the platoon game. If you want to play go where you can play - only way to get reps, get better.
The CJJ model, players have to be ok with either waiting for a turn that may never come or platooning until someone gets hot.

quote:And I recall him saying something along those lines. I expect Jay to tweak his approach to roster construction. Onwards. Upwards.
I think it’s a combination of both depending on the season. Jay knows he needs to be adaptable.

I think CJJ said it a few weeks back in his press conference. You can't go out shopping POWER because it will get you what he got this year. Carraway was a walking error at OSU with a low BA until playoff spike. Not sure what you thought you were getting with him. The others (York/Simpson/Dardar) came from lower level programs with no real pedigree for SEC life. It is what it is...failed evals across the board.
Carraway just never took the step forward he needed to take and now he is here on the payroll with no draft smoke. Does he get processed or return for his senior season? Dardar is always banged up/if the NCAA rule passes does he try for a 7th year of college baseball? same for York/Simpson...

I would bet money that Carraway is not on next year's team.
None of the others will have any eligibility.

what about if the new NCAA eligibility rule takes effect? they will be grandfathered in with a 5 year clock...that would likely at least cover York and Simpson, DarDar would age out.

The NCAA literally just said today they won't be grandfathered in.

NOT comparing Neal to Burrow or Jayden Daniels, but I bet Ohio State didn't regret Burrow transferring in 2018, but did in 2019. Arizona State didn't miss Daniels much in 2022, but probably did in 2023.
We didn't miss Neal in 2025, but he'd make a difference in the lineup in 2026.
