In fairness there were half as many bowls back then, we were playing Notre Dame, and we were a top 15 team. While yes, our expectations were different back then, the Independence Bowl (and bowls in general) was a lot bigger deal in 1997. Hell, even into the 2000s, there were SEC teams who didn't get bowl invites with 7-4 records. We only had three losses heading into that game and our record/ranking would have put us in the conversation for a NY6 bowl by today's standards.

Ah, yes, the ArchManNardo era, with 2 good seasons embedded amongst 11 years of pure shite.

I really take offense to that. In the end, he didn't succeed, but that was mostly due to the ill-advised hire of Lou Tepper.

DiNardo was the right guy at the right time on 1995. He brought back the magic, was successful in getting our whites back at home (this endeared him immensely to LSU football fans at the time), and he was the first LSU coach to beat a #1 team in Florida (1997).

Can you imagine what LSU football would have become if we had listened to the recommendation of many, after Curley's dismissal, and hired *gasp* Pat Sullivan?

DiNardo got Kevin Faulk to come here. That was back when high school talent was leaving the state in droves. I'll never understand how Marshall Faulk ended up at San Diego State -- well, one of the reasons is that LSU recruited him as a DB.
There was a Times-Pic article pre-Katrina about how Louisiana was the highest per capita for producing NFL players and they had a list of all the pros from the state at the time. Only a few Tigers were on that list. The alternative headline could have been "Why LSU football sucked for much of the 1990s"

I didn't say DiNardo was a horrible coach. Don't quote my post out of context.

I know you didn't say DiNardo is a horrible coach, but I've seen that comment before on this board, and it's definitely not true.

This is a massive hire to keep that from happening. The program talent wise/retention wise is at a 20+ year low.

Ole miss Arkansas and tamu are on rise state is ranked and ou+Texas on the way. All these can affect ease of recruiting depth

Our recent history is good enough that a solid hire and we will be fine but a bad hire and we could be in a really bad spot.

Just look at Florida. Nothing is guaranteed even if you are willing to provide the resources.

Hard to believe now but absolutely true. So things are never as bad or as great as they look and things can change quickly for the better overnight.
